Cubs trade Bradley to Mariners

There never was much of a chance the Chicago Cubs were going to keep Milton Bradley past 2009 after suspending the outfielder last September. The Cubs tried to trade Bradley at the Winter Meetings in Indianapolis before finalizing a trade Friday with the Seattle Mariners, where they dealt the switch-hitting $30 million man for pitcher Carlos Silva.

Several media outlets report the Mariners will send $6 million over two years to Chicago.

Bradley was Cubs GM Jim Hendry's biggest off-season acquisition a year ago; he was signed to a three-year, $30 million deal in January after a strong 2008 season with the Texas Rangers in which he hit .321 with 22 home runs and 77 RBI.

But he batted .257 with 12 home runs and just 40 RBI in 124 games with Chicago and was suspended the final 15 games for conduct detrimental to the team.

Specifically, Bradley told a Chicago newspaper: "(Y)ou understand why they haven't won in 100 years here, because it's negative. You go out there and you play harder than anybody on the field and never get credit for it. It's just negativity."

Hendry suspended Bradley the next day, calling the outfielder's actions "intolerable."

Amid shoulder problems, the 30-year-old Silva made just six starts for Seattle a season ago, going 1-3 with an 8.60 ERA, 11 walks and 10 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings. The right-hander was 4-15 with a 6.46 ERA in 28 starts in 2008 and has two years remaining on a four-year, $48 million contract signed prior to the start of 2008.
