Greg Maddux

San Diego, CA – The San Diego Padres announced today that they have acquired two players to be named later or cash considerations from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for right-handed pitcher Greg Maddux. The Padres have also reinstated right-hander Brett Tomko from the 15-day disabled list.

Greg Maddux, 42, has posted a 6-9 record and 3.99 ERA (68 ER/153.1 IP) in 26 starts for San Diego this season with 80 strikeouts compared to 26 walks. Since signing with the Padres as a free agent on December 13, 2006, he has made a combined 60 starts, posting a 20-20 record with a 4.07 ERA (159 ER/351.1 IP), 184 strikeouts and 51 walks over parts of two seasons. In 737 career Major League games (733 starts) with the Chicago Cubs (1986-92, 2004-06), Atlanta Braves (1993-2003), Dodgers (2006) and Padres (2007-08), Maddux has a career record of 353-223 with a 3.14 ERA (1733 ER/4967.2 IP), 109 complete games, 3,353 strikeouts and 995 walks.

Maddux is one victory shy of tying Roger Clemens (354) for eighth place on the all-time Major League wins list and also ranks 10th in career strikeouts. He is a four-time National League Cy Young Award winner (1992-95) and has captured the Rawlings Gold Glove a record 17 times (1990-2002, 2004-07). Maddux passed Cy Young's Major League record last year when he recorded 13 wins for the 20th consecutive season.

Brett Tomko, 35, has been on the disabled list due to a right elbow strain since July 8 (retroactive to July 1). He pitched in six combined games (two starts) in rehabilitation assignments with Single-A Lake Elsinore and Triple-A Portland, allowing five earned runs over 6.0 innings. Prior to his DL stint, Tomko made two relief appearances for the Padres, allowing one hit and one run in 3.0 innings.

This season, Tomko has a combined record of 2-7 with a 6.79 ERA (48 ER/63.2 IP) in 18 games (10 starts) with the Padres and Kansas City Royals. He was 2-7 with a 6.97 ERA (47 ER/60.2 IP) in 16 games (10 starts) with Kansas City before he was designated for assignment on June 12. The Padres signed the Poway, Calif., native on June 27.

Originally selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the second round of the 1995 Draft, Tomko is 95-99 with two saves and a 4.70 ERA (905 ER/1734.2 IP) in 364 career games (260 starts) over parts of 12 seasons with the Reds (1997-99), Seattle Mariners (2000-01), Padres (2002, 2007, 2008), St. Louis Cardinals (2003), San Francisco Giants (2004-05), Dodgers (2006-07) and Royals (2008).
