Tennessee All-Stars Announced

Six players from Double-A Tennessee have been named to the 2007 Southern League All-Star Game, the league announced Tuesday.

Four of the six players tabbed are currently eligible to participate in the event, while two others are unable to participate due to promotions.

The four Tennessee players expected to be on hand for the event are OFs Jorge Cortes and Jake Fox, INF/DH Matt Craig, and RHP Mark Holliman.

Holliman, who tossed seven no-hit innings against Huntsville last Thursday, leads all Southern League starters with a 2.49 ERA in 86 2/3 innings.

A third-round Cubs draft pick from Ole Miss in 2005, the 23-year-old began the year with a 5-0 record and a 0.44 ERA through his first six starts.

As far as position players go, Cortes has batted .312 with one home run and 24 RBIs in 63 games this season. The Cubs signed the 26-year-old Colombia native as a minor league free agent last November.

For his part, Craig has batted .325 with seven home runs, 15 doubles and 34 RBIs through 66 games this season. The 26-year-old enters play Tuesday with a .410 on-base percentage after drawing 27 walks to 42 strikeouts. He was a third-round Cubs draft pick from the University of Richmond in 2002.

Meanwhile, Fox has batted .284 with 14 home runs, 19 doubles and 49 RBIs through 72 games with Tennessee. A mainstay behind the plate for much of his career, the 24-year-old has seen the bulk of his playing time in the outfield this season with select appearances at first base. The Cubs drafted Fox in the third round of the 2003 draft from Michigan.

Additionally, LHP Geoffrey Jones and OF Josh Kroeger were tabbed as All-Stars, but both are unable to participate after being promoted last week to Triple-A Iowa.

Kroeger batted .382 with 11 home runs and 50 RBIs in 66 games with Tennessee prior to the promotion. The Cubs signed the 24-year-old as a minor league free agent last December.

Jones, 27, also signed with the Cubs as a minor league free agent late last year and appeared in 23 games in relief for Tennessee. He was 2-1 with six saves and a 0.36 ERA in 25 innings, striking out 33 and walking four.

The Northern Division All-Stars will be managed by Huntsville hitting coach Sandy Guerrero. The 2007 Southern League All-Star Game is scheduled for Monday, July 9, at Mississippi's Trustmark Park.
