Cubs July 1 Minor League Recap

Boise's Jesse Hodges hits two homes.

Brett Jackson had three RBI in the opener and then launched a three-run walk-off in the night cap as Iowa swept Omaha to move into first place. Jesse Hodges hit a pair of three-run shots to lead Boise to a 14-3 win. Paul Blackburn tossed six shutout innings in Kane County's win and Tennessee rallied to take down Montgomery. Lots of news coming out of Mesa.

AAA—Game 1—Iowa 5, Omaha 3; Game 2—Iowa 7, Omaha 4

Brett Jackson had three RBI in the opener and then smacked a three-run walk-off homer in the nightcap to lead Iowa to the sweep.

At the Dish: GAME 1—Brett Jackson was the hitting star as the right-fielder went 2-3 with a triple and three RBI. Javier Baez had a sacrifice fly and Chris Valaika was 1-3 with a run driven in. Arismendy Alcantara was 1-3 with two strikeouts and Kris Bryant was 0-2 with a walk...GAME 2—Javier Baez led of fetch game-winning rally with a walk, took second on Chris Valaika's single and scored on Kris Bryant's single. Rafael Lopez sacrificed the runners and the Matt Szczur singled to score Valaika and tie the game. After Logan Watkins fanned, Jackson delivered the walk-off deep over the right-field wall..... Jackson, Szczur, Bryant all had two hits. Arismendy Alcantara was 2-4 and extended his hitting streak to 11 games, matching his career-high he set at Daytona in 2012. Javier Baez walked twice and scored two runs.

On the Hill: GAME1—Kyle Hendricks won his PCL leading 10th game, working six innings. He surrendered two runs on four hits to start the game but settled into a groove and only allowed one run over the next five innings. The Dartmouth grad fanned seven and allowed a homer in his 96-pitch outing, 65 for strikes.......Zac Rosscup (2-0 2.89 ERA) earned his first AAA save working a 1-2-3 seventh with a strikeout. GAME 2—The Ivy League was represented in the both ends of the twin-bill as Zak Hermans, a 30th round pick last year out of Princeton, landed in Des Moines 65 minutes before first pitch and made it to Principal Park. Promoted from Mesa to Kane County in May, Hermans, a relief pitcher, made the emergency start and his AAA debut. He worked into the fourth and gave up two runs on four hits and two walks. He got a couple of balls up but showed good composure on the mound and fanned two hitters, including the first batter of the game in his 54-pitch outing.......Alberto Cabrera went 2.2 innings of relief and got the I-Cubs out of a one-out bases loaded jam in the fourth, allowing an inherited run to score on a sac fly.......Armando Rivero (2-0, 2.84 ERA) fanned five and tossed a scoreless 7th but allowed two-run homer in the 8th.

I-Cubs Notes: Chris Rusin (5-10, 4.16 ERA) will be on the mound Wednesday night when the I-Cubs look to make it four-in-a-row over the Storm Chasers.


AA—Tennessee 6, Montgomery 5

Elliot Soto's RBI single in the bottom of the 8th capped off a three-run rally as the Smokies beat the Biscuits.

At the Dish: Soto's (.208) game-winning single capped off a three hit night that included a double. Charlie Cutler (.335) was 2-3 and scored twice while Jonathan Mota (.220) was 3-4 with a double and a run. Kevin Brown (.417) isn't have many problems adjusting to AA as he went 2-4 and knock in two runs in the 6th with a triple. Jae-Hoon Ha (.214) cut the lead to one in the 8th with a RBI single and Anthony Giansanti (.223) tied the game with a RBI groundout.

On the Hill: Smokies used six pitchers as Corey Black got the start but couldn't get the third out of the fifth and left with a line of 4.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 4 BB 1 K, 80 pitches, 43 strikes. Jeffrey Lorick got the final out of the fifth but P.J. Francescon allowed four runs in 1.1 innings. Hunter Cervenka got charged with a blown save and a run and Zach Cates (1-1, 2.61 ERA) earned the win with a scoreless 8th. Frank Batista worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save.

Tennessee pitcher C.J. Edwards threw 25 pitches off the mound in Mesa on Wednesday as he moved closer to returning.

High A—Brevard County 3, Daytona 0

Two Manatees pitchers blanked Daytona on five hits as Brevard County moved into first place.

At the Dish: Albert Almora (.259) had the Cubs only extra base hit, a triple. Pin-Chieh Chen (.275) had two hits while Marco Hernandez (.284) and Wes Darvill (.254) singled.

On the Hill: Jose Rosario (4-5, 4.78 ERA) took the loss, allowing five hits and two walks in 5.2 innings. He fanned two and got 10 ground ball outs. Stephen Perakslis (1-0, 5.49 ERA) went 2.1 innings of scoreless relief and Tyler Bremer made his FSL debut, working around two hits in the 9th.

D-Cubs Notes: Justin Amlung (1-2, 6.00 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday night at Brevard County.


Low A—Kane County 6, Peoria 1

Kane County scored all six of their runs in the third to win the series opener.

At the Dish: Benjamin Carhart's three-run homer and a two-run double off the bat of Jeimer Candelario highlighted the Cougars third. Carlos Penalver singled and scored on a passed ball for the first run of the inning. Shawon Dunston had two hits and swiped three bases (10). Kyle Schwarber (.378) was 0-3 with a walk and it was Carhart's second homer.

On the Hill: Paul Blackburn improved to 7-2 with six shutout innings. He allowed four hits and fanned three. Jose Arias tossed two scoreless frames in his first game back from the DL and James Pugliese allowed a run in the ninth.

Cougars Notes: Tyler Skulina (4-3, 2.63 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday night.


Short-Season—Boise 14, Tri-City 3

Jesse Hodges hit a pair of three-run homers to lead Boise's offensive onslaught at Tri-City.

At the Dish: Not a better way for Jesse Hodges to celebrate Canada Day with a pair of three-run homers. He was 3-5 with 6 RBI...Danny Canela went 4-4 with three runs while Jeffrey Baez was 3-5, scored twice, homered, and knocked in three.....C Mark Zagunis went 2-4 with a triple and two RBI.....Mark Malave was 2-5 and hit into a triple play.....Rashad Crawford and Zak Blair had two hits each.......Boise had 19 hits and were 8-16 with RISP

On the Hill: Tyler Ihrig (2-0, 3.38 ERA) worked six innings and finished the night with five punchouts. He allowed two runs on six hits......Trey Lang worked around a pair of walks and extended his scoreless streak to 8.1 IP.......Francisco Carrillo threw the final two innings, allowing an unearned run with two strikeouts.


Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 6, Reds 4

Cubs scored three runs in the bottom of the 7th and Ryan Williams earned the win in his pro debut.

At the Dish: Cubs may not be signing any top July 2 prospects but part of the 2013 International haul was on display in Mesa. LF Eloy Jimenez made his first start and collected his first pro hit, a double. The 17-year-old finished 2-4 with a run......SS Gleyber Torres was on base four times out of the leadoff spot, going 3-3 with a walk. The teenager knocked in his 7th run and was caught stealing twice......Jorge Soler played the entire game in right and was 0-3 with a walk and a RBI...Ricardo Marcano was 2-4 with a double and Charcer Burks was 1-3, scored twice, knocked in a run (9), and stole his 4th base....C Yorvit Torrealba got the start and went 1-3....Bryant Flete was 1-3 with a RBI.

On the Hill: Luis Hernandez (1-0, 2.70 ERA) threw five innings in the start, allowing four runs on five hits. He fanned two and allowed a pair of homers...... Zach Hedges, 26th round pick, made his pro debut working a 1-2-3 frame.....Ryan Williams earned the win in his pro debut, working a scoreless seventh with a pair of strikeouts.....Pedro Arajua recorded his first hold and Yomar Morel worked a perfect 9th for his first save.


Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 1, Phillies 0

Danny Gutierrez hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th for the game's only run.

At the Dish: SS Andruw Monasterio opened the ninth with a single and took second on a bunt. After a walk to DH Luis Hidalgo, both runners stole, but Monasterio was thrown out at home on aground ball off the bat of 3B Wladimir Galindo. Gutierrez then delivered the two-out game-winner. Monasterio and Gutierrez both finished with two his.

On the Hill: Carlos Rodriguez worked six scoreless frames, allowing six hits and two walks to go along with five strikeouts. Juan Rengifo fanned three in two innings and Julio Sanchez (4-1, 3.90ERA) earned the win, as he worked around a walk and a hit in the 9th.


Dominican Summer League—Astros Orange 7, Cubs 4

Astros used a four-run 8th to beat the Cubs.

At the Dish: Cubs had 11 hits but left 10 on base and were 4-14 with RISP....DH Yohan Matos and LF Luis Ubiera both had two hits and a RBI. 3B Miguel Ruiz went 1-2, scored twice, and knocked in a run. CF Robert Garcia was 1-5 with a RBI.

On the Hill: Oscar De La Cruz tossed four shutout frames and surrendered a run in the fifth. He gave up five hits, walked two and sent six down on strikes....Luiz Escanio allowed two runs in two innings and Dilson Vasquez was charged with a blown save and the loss as all four batters he faced in the 8th scored. Jeffry Hernandez got the final three outs.
