Cubs April 2 Minor League Recap

Rock Shoulders homered in exhibition win.

The Daytona Cubs beat Embry-Riddle 7-0 in an exhibition game Wednesday night behind a two-run homer from Rock Shoulders. The Cubs also finalized their minor league opening day rosters and name starters for opening day.

Daytona blanks Embry-Riddle

Rock Shoulders launched a two-run homer and three Daytona pitchers held Embry-Riddle College scoreless in a 7-0 win in a seven-inning exhibition at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona.

Yao-Lin Wang worked four scoreless frames in the exhibition game, striking out six, including the side in the fourth. Austin Kirk tossed two scullers frames and Starling Peralta had runners on second and third with one out but fanned the next two hitters in the seventh.

A walk by Daniel Vogelbach, the first of three on the night, followed by a stolen base and a two-base throwing error gave Daytona 1-0 lead in the second. Gioskar Amaya walked, stolen second and third, and scored on Tim Saunders' sacrifice fly. Amaya added a sac fly and then Daytona added four runs in the sixth, two coming on Shoulders' homer. Oliver Zapata had a RBI single.

Daniel Poncedeleon, the Cubs 14th round pick in '13, pitched an inning for Embry-Riddle against Daytona. He allowed an unearned run on a throwing error and got Shoulders looking.

Right-hander Felix Pena get the start in the D-Cubs opener at Brevard County n Thursday. Game begins at 6:30 p.m. EST.

Cubs cut minor league players

The Cubs have also released several minor leaguers to make room on the rosters including the organizations's 2012 Minor League Pitcher of the Year Nick Struck. Other cuts and their '13 teams were the cuts were SS Walter Ibarra (free agent), RHP Paolo Espino (free agent), RHP Orbandy Rodriguez (Boise), RHP Nick Struck (Tennessee), LHP Franke Del Valle (Daytona), LHP Al Yevoli (Kane County), C Wilfredo Petit (Mesa), and SS Alex Sanchez (Mesa).
