Cubs July 22 Minor League Recap

Sam Wilson, the Cubs 8th round pick, earned his first professional win tossing two innings of scoreless relief in Boise's 10-0 win. Kris Bryant knocked in both runs in Mesa's 2-1 win and Cubs OF David DeJesus scored two times in his third rehab game.

AAA—New Orleans 9, Iowa 2

New Orleans rocked Iowa pitching for 13 hits, including seven extra base hits.

At the Plate: Donnie Murphy (.264) hit his 12th homer in the third and Edgar Gonzalez (.381) doubled home Brad Nelson (.259) in the fourth. Nelson went 2-3 and Logan Watkins was 1-3 with a walk.

On the Mound: With Chris Rusin flying to Arizona to start for Chicago, Nicholas Struck (5-7 6.36 ERA) was called into duty and the right-hander went five innings throwing 73 pitches. He allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts. Jeffry Antigua (2-1 4.61) allowed two runs in two innings on three hits. He threw 34 pitches and hit a batter.

Cubs Notes: 3B Mike Olt and RHP Justin Grimm will join Iowa after being acquired in the Matt Garza deal. Olt is expected to play third base and Grimm will join the starting rotation.

AA—Jacksonville 5, Tennessee 4

Mark Canha hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to give Jacksonville (16-13) the win over Tennessee (18-11)

At the Plate: Rafael Lopez led the offense going 2-4 with a double and 3 RBI. Justin Bour, Rubi Silva and John Andreoli had two hits each. Bour knocked in the Smokies other run.

On the Mound: Zach Rosscup (2-1 2.58) took the loss allowing the three-run homer in the eighth. Kyle Hendricks (9-3 1.91 ERA) tossed seven innings yielding two unearned runs on four hits. He fanned six and threw 80 pitches, getting 11 groundouts. Hendricks is distinguishing himself as one of the Cubs top pitching prospects as he leads the Southern League in ERA and third in WHIP 1.04. P.J. Francescon fanned three in 1.1 innings of shutout ball.

High A—Daytona

Game rained out with St. Lucie will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Cubs Notes: RHP C.J. Edwards will join the Daytona Cubs after being in the Matt Garza trade with Texas. Edwards has spent the season with the Hickory Crawdads (Low Class A) going 8-2 with a 1.83 ERA in 18 starts. The 21-year-old has 122 strikeouts in 93.1 IP and a 1.03 WHIP. He has not allowed a homer during his pro career (160.1 IP)

Low A—Lansing 5, Kane County 2

Lansing (9-21) scored three times in the first and held on to avoid the sweep by Kane County (7-22).

At the Plate: All the runs for Kane County came in the second on Reggie Golden's fifth homer of the year, a two-run shot and the second straight night he's homered. The Cougars were held to six hits but did draw eight walks. They were just 1-8 with RISP and left 13 on base. Kane County is 4th in the MWL in OBP .340 but 14th in runs scored.

On the Mound: Juan Paniagua made his second start for Kane County and he only lasted 3.1 innings. The right-hander allowed five hits and walked three as three runs scored, two earned. Paniagua, who had four strikeouts, didn't help his own cause, throwing two balls away on pickoff attempts to first. Sheldon McDonald fanned four in 1.2 innings but allowed a run on two hits. Andrew McKirahan surrendered a run in his inning of relief on two hits. Justin Amlung, Nathan Dorris, and Stephen Perakslis all worked a scoreless inning.

Short-Season—Boise 10, Everett 0

Five Boise (21-17) pitchers blanked Everett (23-15) on three hits and the offense knocked out 15 hits.

At the Plate: Every starter had a hit and eight knocked in runs as the Hawks were squaring up the ball. Cael Brockmeyer (.352) and Carlos Penalver (.228) both had two hits and scored twice. Daniel Lockhart (.310), Lance Rymel (.324), Jacob Rogers (.287) and Jordan Hankins (.250) all had two hits. Rogers launched a solo homer (4) in the seventh and Rymel extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

On the Mound: LHP Sam Wilson earned his first pro win as the left hander and four other pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout. For the second time in the series, the 2013 draft class shut down the AquaSox as Rob Zastryzny (2IP 1H 1K), Sam Wilson (2IP 1BB 4K), Zack Godley (2IP, 1H 2K) and Scott Frazier (2IP, 2K) blanked Everett. RHP Tyler Bremer pitched a scoreless ninth.

Hawks Notes: Shawon Dunston and David Bote are both out of the lineup after last night's collision in the outfield. They are both sore but okay and are expected back in the lineup soon…..Boise had 59 hits in the past four games.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 2, Royals 1

Kris Bryant drove in both runs as the Cubs (12-13) down the Royals (10-16).

At the Plate: One night after going 0-3 and committing three errors, Kris Bryant delivered a sacrifice fly in the first and then doubled home a run in the third for his first pro hit. David DeJesus looks ready to rejoin the big league club going 2-4 and scoring both runs in his third game. C Wilfredo Petit had the Cubs other hit.

On the Mound: Josh Davis (2-0 0.00) picked up his second win tossing 1.2 innings of no-hit ball. Tyler Ihrig (0-0 0.00) fanned three in two scoreless frames and Trevor Graham (0-0 1.50) worked the final two innings for his first pro save. Erick Leal (0-2 3.68) got the start allowing a run on four hits with two punchouts in 3.1 innings.

Dominican Summer League—Tigers 4, Cubs 2

In a battle of two of the top teams in the DSL, the Tigers (29-12) downed the Cubs (28-13).

At the Plate: Cubs were held to four hits and scored both runs in the fifth on sacrifice flies by Varonex Cuevas and Dalfis Ortiz. Adonis Paula was 1-3 and extended his hitting streak to five games.

On the Mound: Hector Perez took the loss giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk. Pedro Araujo fanned four in three no-hit innings. Gilberto Abreu allowed a run on a hit in three frames. Cubs pitching combined for 10 strikeouts.

Cubs Notes: Three Cubs prospects were named to the Dominican Summer League NL All-Star team— 2B Dalfis Ortiz, C Antonio Valerio, and RHP Jose Zapata. Ortiz hit leadoff and went 1-2 while Valerio struck out in his only plate appearance. Zapata pitched a scoreless fifth inning allowing a hit. The AL stars won 3-1.

Venezuelan Summer League—Rays 4, Cubs 2

The Rays (16-41) scored twice in their first at-bat and added two more in the seventh to down the Cubs (30-26).

At the Plate: The Cubs only had six hits scoring a run in the fourth when Ricardo Marcano doubled and scored on Roney Alcala's single, his 35th RBI. Marcano added a RBI groundout in the eighth scoring Jesus Gonzalez.

On the Mound: RHP Adbert Alzolay (4-3) fanned seven but took the loss allowing two runs on six hits, only one earned, in five innings. Manuel Fuentes allowed two runs in 1.1 innings while Harrinson Bermudez (1.2 IP) and Cesar Romero (1 IP) held the Rays scoreless.
