2012 Draft Scouting Report: Chase DeJong
School: Woodrow Wilson H.S. (Calif.)
Events Scouted: Perfect Game National Showcase
DeJong is physically reminiscent of Adam Wainwright at a similar stage. He's long, fairly athletic, and still has a lot of room to grow. Because of that, evaluators rave about his projection. He's going to get bigger and stronger, and should see some added velocity from it.
With an arm that works free and easy, the ball comes out of DeJong's hand nicely and he has a pretty consistent handle on his release point at this stage. He gets good extension out front, using his height and length effectively. He's getting the downhill plane you want to see as well.
There's more on the way for DeJong. For now, though, his fastball lives at 89-92 mph and shows good life down in the zone. He's been up to 94 mph this spring and perhaps some of that huge projection is beginning to show up earlier than expected.
DeJong has his moments with his curveball where it shows the makings of a high quality big league offering. Perhaps most importantly, he seems able to consistently locate this pitch. However, the bite is still a little inconsistent. At times, it's a biting 12-6 hook at 75-77 mph, but he does tend to let it get some loop to it at times.
He flashes the changeup only once and a while currently, but it seems to have the makings of a solid offering. Thrown at 81-83 mph, the arm speed as well as the differential are where you'd want them to be.
Chase DeJong is a pitcher scouts can dream on. He's already living in the low 90s, for the most part, with his fastball and seems very likely to add more as he matures. And, given what he's already showing in terms of secondary pitches, the future overall skill set on the mound could be very attractive.
