Became a Cardinal
Acquired along with cash from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for a Minor League player to be named later (outfielder Sean Danielson) on July 31, 2007.
2008 Season
The Cardinals were expecting more from Pineiro than his 7-7 record and 5.15 ERA. Bumped from the rotation at one point, there will be some debate in the offseason, as to Pineiro's role with the Cardinals in 2009.
2007 Season
Pineiro began the season with the Boston Red Sox after signing as a free agent over the offseason to pitch out of their bullpen. After going 1-1 with a 5.03 ERA in 31 relief appearances, the Red Sox designated Pineiro for assignment and assigned him to their Triple-A International League Pawtucket affiliate on July 25. After posting a 2.25 ERA in eight minor league innings, he was dealt to the Cardinals, along with cash, for a minor league player to be named later on July 31. He made 11 starts for the Cardinals down the stretch, going 6-4 with an ERA of 3.96. He fanned 40 and walked just 12 in 63 2/3 innings pitched. Opposing batters hit 11 home runs against him.
Career Notes
A 12th round draft selection by the Mariners in 1997, Pineiro made his major league debut in 2000 at the age of 21. He has compiled a career mark of 65-60 with a 4.47 ERA in 227 games (159 starts). Pineiro enjoyed his best seasons for the Mariners in 2002 and 2003 when he went 14-7 and 16-11, respectively. His 16 wins in 2003 ranked eighth in the American League, as did his 3.24 ERA in 2002.
