Byrd is Cubs' Lone All-Star

Byrd will be going to Anaheim

Even though their record is a poor 35-47, the Cubs thought they could have had more than one player chosen to the National League All-Star team.

As it is, only center fielder Marlon Byrd will be going to Anaheim, barring a last-minute replacement that would put another Cub in.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella lauded Byrd's selection as a reserve, but said he voted for three of his players. Piniella did not disclose his votes, but it's likely he went with starting pitcher Carlos Silva and closer Carlos Marmol, with lefty setup man Sean Marshall getting consideration as well.

"Marlon's done a nice job for us, a really nice job for us," Piniella said. "He's played hard, he's got some energy to him, he does a nice job out in center field. It was a good sign by (general manager) Jim Hendry. He's been a good positive for us."

Byrd signed a three-year deal with the Cubs last winter. He's batting .309 and has played a solid, and sometimes spectacular, defense, in center field.
