Hendry: No Time to Panic
What, me worry? (GETTY)

Cubs General manager Jim Hendry isn't about to push the panic button after a slow start by his team.

He also said manager Lou Piniella is the right man to lead the Cubs out of their funk, which has them with a record of 15-20 after Wednesday's 4-3 victory over the Marlins. The Cubs snapped a four-game losing streak with the win.

"I would stand by this: We have a real good group of position players," Hendry said. "We felt great about it coming out of camp. We've got good players that don't get in the lineup every day that have been good players for a long time, solid players. There really isn't anywhere to look.

"I would think that our position players are not a weakness at all. We're just in one of these funks where we can't get over the hump and get the runs in, but it's not out of lack of talent and not out of lack of these guys working. We certainly don't have any desire or notion to start pointing fingers or hanging our heads or throwing in the towel like we're not going to be able to get out of it."

Hendry stated what everybody watches the team already knows: The Cubs need first baseman Derrek Lee and third baseman Aramis Ramirez to hit.

Lee had a pair of hits Wednesday, but is batting .229. Ramirez is at .159.

"Unfortunately, obviously, Aramis and Derrek are off to tough starts," Hendry said. "You'd like to think they're going to get back to their old selves. Hopefully, that one or two good games will get them going."

NOTES, QUOTES

--Ryan Theriot sat out because of a tight right hamstring. The Cubs said Theriot will be ready to play in Friday's series opener against the Pirates at Wrigley Field. Theriot, the leadoff hitter, is batting .329 with a .357 on-base percentage.

--Mike Fontenot started at second base in place of Theriot. Fontenot opened the season as the starter at second, but with Starlin Castro up and Theriot playing second, Fontenot is relegated to utility duties.

"I just do whatever I can whenever I get the chance to get in there," Fontenot said. "I try to help the team in any way. That's what I've always tried to do."

--Carlos Silva is the first Cubs pitcher to start the season 4-0 since Ryan Dempster in 2008. Silva has a team-high five quality starts.

"I feel good not only because 4-0," he said. "I feel like I've helped my team, like I'm helping my team right now. I feel good because I feel like I am somebody now."

--Lee went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Lee's batting average is .229. He was moved Tuesday to the cleanup spot, and he's 4-for-8 in the two games as the No. 4 hitter.

--Castro moved up from the No. 8 spot in the order to second. Piniella says Castro will move back down to eighth Friday with Theriot coming back. Castro has reached base safely in all six games he's played. On Wednesday, he was 2-for-4 with a run. What originally was called an error in the first inning was changed to a hit. Castro has five errors in six games.

"He's going to find his niche," Hendry said. "He's going to be very, very good defensively. We're not worried about his defense at all."

--Ramirez, who is batting .159, got the day off. Jeff Baker played third and went 0-for-2, walking once. Ramirez has not homered since April 15.
