Cubs right-hander Carlos Marmol did not suffer any serious injuries after being involved in an automobile accident in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, the club said Wednesday.

An Associated Press report said that Marmol was hit by a truck carrying the Cubs’ ace setup man and two others (a friend and a relative) in Marmol’s hometown of Bonao, D.R., around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Marmol, the report said, had just returned to the Dominican following his team’s first-round playoff exit in the National League Division Series.

Speaking to reporters on a conference call Wednesday, Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry announced that Marmol was fine and that he suffered only a cut on his head.

“Nothing wrong with his right arm thankfully,” Hendry said.

Moreover, Cubs Vice President of Player Personnel Oneri Fleita debunked previous reports that Marmol had received seven stitches for the cut.

“He did not get any stitches,” Fleita said in an e-mail. “He did not sustain any injuries. The reports we received (Tuesday) were inaccurate.”

A National League All-Star this season, Marmol was 2-4 with seven saves and a 2.68 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 87-1/3 innings for Chicago.
