Deeds was selected to the Postseason All-Star Team as an outfielder. Acquired in a trade from the Minnesota Twins on April 12, he has paid huge dividends for the Smokies, leading the team with a .335 average (second in the SL) to go along with 11 home runs and 55 RBIs. His first year in the Southern League has been a huge success, as today’s naming comes on the heels of his selection to the league’s Midseason All-Star Team.
Fox’s year was as equally impressive as Deeds’. Selected to the All-Star Team as the designated hitter, Fox has hit .311 in 100 games for the Smokies. He was sent down from Triple-A Iowa on May 8, yet currently trails only West Tenn’s Michael Wilson with 25 home runs. His .996 OPS leads the league. Fox was named the league’s “Hitter of the Week” for the week of June 17-22.
Spears has been a very pleasant surprise for the Smokies in 2008. Selected to the Postseason All-Star Team as the league’s “Best Hustler,” Spears has hit .299 this year with seven home runs and 51 RBIs. He leads the Smokies in walks (58) and is second in runs scored (72). Like Deeds, Spears was named to the league’s Midseason All-Star Team in July.
