Cashner was selected by Chicago as the 19th overall pick in the 2008 draft and had been pitching with the Boise Hawks (Short-Season Class-A) before getting the call up to Daytona.
Cashner, a native of Lufkin, TX, features a mid to high 90s fastball and a hard slider. As a junior at Texas Christian University, there were times when Cashner’s fastball touched 98 mph. At TCU this past season, Cashner went 9-4 in 30 games as a relief pitcher. He posted a 2.32 ERA over 54.1 innings, collecting nine saves and striking out 80 batters.
With Boise this season, Cashner was 1-1 with a 4.96 ERA in six appearances, four of them starts. In his last three appearances with Boise, Cashner went 1-0 allowing three runs, just one of them earned, in 10.2 innings pitched.
The Cubs currently stand in first place atop the Florida State League East Division with a key series forthcoming this weekend against the Jupiter Hammerheads to decide the second-half champion. Cashner will make his first start with Daytona this Friday against Jupiter at Roger Dean Stadium.
