Had things gone according to plan, Petrick might have made a case for a September call-up next month. But he was slow to make his 2008 debut, beginning the year in extended spring training because he was "a little behind the others," the Cubs said. (Petrick made just one appearance in big league spring training, facing one batter.)
When he made his first regular season appearance on May 4, it was in Class-A ball at Daytona. That stint lasted only three weeks before Petrick was placed on the disabled list (shoulder) and returned to Mesa. His initial stint in Daytona was not a rehab assignment, and there was no timetable for Petrick to return to a higher level.
Petrick has not pitched in a live game since May 25 officially, and recently BaseballAmerica.com reported that the 24-year-old had been placed on the suspended list. But that much is neither here nor there, the Cubs say.
"He's (just) on the DL," one Cubs official said.
Petrick began last season at Daytona, but worked his way up to Chicago for his big league debut in late June. In eight appearances, he had a 7.45 ERA.
The Cubs drafted Petrick from Morris High School in 2002.
