Colvin Named Hitter of the Week

Tyler Colvin

Chicago Cubs prospect and Class AA Tennessee outfielder Tyler Colvin was named the Southern League's Hitter of the Week on Monday.

Colvin discovered his power stroke on the road, leading the Smokies to a convincing series victory at first-half champion West Tenn. After managing just eight extra-base hits in his first 34 road games of the season, the 22-year-old Colvin produced five extra-base hits in six games against the Diamond Jaxx to yield an .808 slugging percentage.

He ranked second in the circuit with eight RBI during the week as Tennessee won five times and outscored West Tenn, 50-30. Colvin launched a three-run homer for his first road blast of the season in Wednesday's 6-3 triumph.

The native of North Augusta, SC added three hits, including an RBI triple, in an 11-5 victory the next night and belted a solo homer on Saturday.

The Chicago Cubs' first-round pick in the 2006 draft, Colvin has driven in 11 runs in his first 12 games of the second half to help the Smokies open a three-game lead (9-3) in the North Division standings.

For the season, Colvin is batting .240 with seven home runs in 81 games.
