Ascanio Recalled

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Jose Ascanio from Triple-A Iowa and placed left-handed pitcher Scott Eyre on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to June 27) with a left groin strain.

Ascanio, who wears uniform No. 58, begins his second stint with the Cubs and is available for today's game against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

The 23-year-old posted a 1.80 ERA (1 ER/5.0 IP) with no record in four relief outings for Chicago from May 20-28, limiting the opponent to a .235 batting average. He made his Cubs debut with 2.0 shutout innings May 20 at Houston while his most recent big league outing came May 28 vs. the Dodgers when he tossed a scoreless inning.

With Iowa this season, Ascanio has gone 1-0 with 11 saves and a 3.86 ERA (14 ER/32.2 IP) in 24 relief appearances. He has walked 16 and struck out 33 while limiting hitters to a .186 batting average, including a .162 mark against right-handed batters. Ascanio posted a 0.96 ERA (1 ER/9.1 IP) in seven May appearances.

Obtained by Chicago December 4, 2007, from Atlanta in exchange for pitcher Will Ohman and infielder Omar Infante, Ascanio is 1-1 with a 4.29 ERA (10 ER/21.0 IP) in 17 career major league relief appearances between the Braves (2007) and Cubs (2008).

Eyre, 36, has gone 2-0 with a 4.91 ERA (6 ER/11.0 IP) in 18 relief appearances for Chicago this season. His franchise record 33 consecutive scoreless relief outings, which began August 16, 2007, was snapped June 15 in Toronto.
