DES MOINES – The Iowa Cubs have returned from a 12-game road trip and were set to begin a nine-game homestand here Friday, but severe flooding will keep the Cubs out of Principal Park tonight.

Flood waters from the adjacent Des Moines and Raccoon rivers currently surround Principal Park. A voluntary evacuation order, advised to be completed tonight by 6 p.m., was issued for downtown residents and businesses on both sides of the river.

Friday’s series opener between the Cubs and Nashville Sounds was postponed, but neither Saturday’s contest nor Sunday’s double-header has yet been called off.

“[The water] has already started to recede,” said Iowa Cubs Vice President and Assistant General Manager Jim Nahas. “Obviously, we’re not geniuses about this stuff, but ultimately in the next few days, it will be back within the banks.”

But today water rose into dugouts and onto the warning track inside the park. Nahas said the Cubs' staff is still hoping to be able to use the field this weekend.

“If it doesn’t happen tomorrow, we feel pretty confident that we’ll be able to get [the doubleheader] in on Sunday,” he said.

The flooding is the result of record rainfall that has accumulated rapidly over the last month. According to Associated Press reports, 83 of the state’s 99 counties have been declared disaster areas, and nine rivers are at or above historic flood levels.
