Samardzija Seeks the Right Mix

KODAK, Tenn. – The Cubs knew Jeff Samardzija was a raw pitcher with minimal college experience who could throw some heat. They knew he would need some seasoning in the minors to develop a repertoire and learn to change speeds. Now they're finding out that he is a team-oriented player willing to reach out to others.

Samardzija, in only his second full year of pro baseball, was recently chased in three innings after giving up six walks in a late April game for Double-A Tennessee, which included putting the first batter he faced on base with four straight pitches.
