First basemen/catcher Blake Lalli has been promoted to Daytona while RHP Dae-Eun Rhee has been placed on the 7-day disabled list with right triceps tendentious. RHP Billy Muldowney and infielder Elvis Lara will join the Chiefs as they open a six-game homestand with Fort Wayne tonight at 6:30 PM.
Lalli, who spilt time behind the plate as well as at first base for the Chiefs this season, heads to Daytona after a successful start to the 2008 season. Lalli was hitting .283 with one home run and seven RBI in 12 games prior to the promotion. Lalli spent the entire 2007 season with Peoria where he hit .295 with four home runs and 33 runs batted in. He also made six appearances out of the Chiefs bullpen and did not surrender a run in four innings of work on the mound.
Muldowney, an eighth round pick in 2006 out of the University of Pittsburgh, was the Chiefs 2007 opening day starter. After six starts in which he went 2-3 with a 5.24 ERA, including one complete game, the 23-year old, was shutdown due to discomfort in his pitching arm. His last outing of the season came in May 9th in Dayton, when he allowed five runs on three hits in just 1 1/3 innings of work. He returned to extended spring training after recovering from the injury but made just two appearances in the month of June. He went 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in just three innings of work before being shutdown for the season with reoccurring arm pain.
Lara, a 21-year old free agent, was signed by the Cubs in 2006. He spent the 2007 season in Mesa after spending the 2006 season with in the Dominican Summer League. Last year with Mesa, Lara hit .267 with one home run and eight RBI in 31 games. He primarily played second base but also saw some time at third. The Dominican native hit .325 with two home runs and 46 runs driven in during the ’06 season with the DSL Cubs.
