An official statement from Major League Baseball read:
"The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that Chicago Cubs Minor League player Robert Hernandez has received a 50-game suspension for testing positive for stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension of Hernandez will be effective immediately.
"Hernandez is currently with Single-A Peoria of the Midwest League."
At age 18, Hernandez was the youngest pitcher in the Midwest League a season ago. The right-hander made 20 starts for Peoria and was 8-9 with a 4.34 ERA in 103 2/3 innings, during which time he struck out 71 batters and walked 28. Hernandez was signed by Cubs scout Hector Ortega in Venezuela in July, 2005.
