CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today announced that the club has sent outfielder Buck Coats to Cincinnati for a player to be named. In addition, left-handed pitcher Clay Rapada has been claimed off waivers by Detroit. | |||

That transaction satisfies the clubs’ August 23 trade in which Chicago obtained outfielder Craig Monroe and a cash consideration in exchange for a player to be named. Coats, 25, was originally drafted by the Cubs in the 18th round of the 2000 Draft. With Triple-A Iowa this season, the left-handed batter is hitting .303 (138-for-455) with 21 doubles, 11 home runs and 59 RBI in 123 games. He made his major league debut with Chicago last season, hitting .167 (3-for-18) in 18 games. Rapada, 26, is 7-2 with 17 saves and a 3.58 ERA (22 ER/55.1 IP) in 55 relief appearances for Iowa this season. Signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in July of 2002, Rapada made his major league debut this season, tossing a scoreless 0.1 innings June 14 vs. Seattle. |
