CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today selected left-handed pitcher Carmen Pignatiello and recalled infielder/outfielder Jake Fox from Triple-A Iowa. In corresponding moves, right-handed pitcher Sean Gallagher and infielder Eric Patterson were optioned to Iowa. To make room for Pignatiello on the 40-man roster, catcher Henry Blanco has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

A 2000 graduate of Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, Ill., Pignatiello will wear uniform No. 63 and looks to make his major league debut tonight at Wrigley Field when the Cubs host the Reds at 7:05 p.m. CT.

Pignatiello, 24, has gone 2-0 with four saves, a 2.38 ERA (14 ER/53.0 IP), 15 walks and 47 strikeouts in 48 relief appearances between Double-A Tennessee and Iowa this season. With the I-Cubs, he has limited left-handed hitters to a .162 batting average (12-for-74).

Selected by Chicago in the 20th round of the 2000 June Draft, Pignatiello was selected as the 2000 Illinois Baseball Player of the Year by Gatorade and named the 2000 Chicago Sun-Times Player of the Year.

In eight minor league seasons, Pignatiello has gone 49-43 with five saves and a 3.66 ERA (342 ER/840.0 IP) in 238 games (112 starts).

Fox (Watch Video), 25, begins his second stint with the Cubs this season, having appeared in two games (0-for-2) from July 19-27. Since he was optioned to Iowa July 27, he has hit .328 (20-for-61) with five doubles, five home runs and 13 RBI in 15 games, including a three-homer performance August 11 at Oklahoma.

Gallagher, 21, has a 7.82 ERA (11 ER/12.2 IP) in seven games for Chicago in his rookie season. He picked up his first career save July 18 vs. San Francisco, tossing the final 4.0 innings of a 12-1 victory at Wrigley Field. He made his big league debut June 9 at Atlanta, tossing 3.1 relief innings. Between Tennessee and Iowa this season, he has gone 10-3 with a 3.03 ERA (29 ER/86.0 IP) in 16 starts.

Patterson (Watch Video), 24, appeared in five games with Chicago, including his major league debut August 6 in Houston. The following night, he made the start at second base and picked up his first career hit, a second-inning single off Woody Williams. With Iowa this season, Patterson is hitting .299 (135-for-451) with 23 doubles, six triples, 14 home runs and 62 RBI in 111 games. The left-handed hitter was named to the 2007 Pacific Coast League All-Star squad.

Blanco, 35, landed on the 15-day disabled list June 1 (retroactive to May 31) with a cervical herniated disc. He has batted .194 (7-for-36) with three RBI in 14 games for Chicago this season.
