Atkins started game one of the doubleheader and gave up a season-high six earned runs on six hits in three innings. The right-hander was 8-7 with a 3.13 ERA in 20 starts with Daytona, striking out 88 and walking 31. He held opposing hitters to a .235 average against in 115 innings.
The 22-year-old Atkins was the Cubs' seventh-round pick in the 2004 draft from Northeast Guilford High School in McLeansville, N.C. A season ago at Class A Peoria, he led the Cubs farm system with 13 wins.
Samardzija () also started Wednesday, but had one of his better outings to date. The right-hander allowed two runs on three hits in six innings. He struck out two and walked one. Winless in nearly three months to open the season, he was 3-8 with a 4.95 ERA in 107 1/3 innings.
The 22-year-old Samardzija was selected in the fifth round of the 2006 draft from Notre Dame. A two-sport athlete with the Irish football and baseball teams, he signed a five-year, $10 million major league contract with the Cubs last January.
For his part, Camp was promoted for the second time in the span of a month. He reached base safely in 13 consecutive games upon joining Daytona from Peoria, batting .362 with six doubles while playing both center field and second base with the team. With Peoria, Camp hit .249 in 91 games.
The 23-year-old Camp was selected in the 13th round of the 2006 draft from North Carolina State.
