Cubs Stand Pat

Piniella not bothered

The Cubs stood pat at the non-waiver trading deadline Tuesday, but that didn't bother manager Lou Piniella.

"We've played really well with what we have," Piniella said. "And we'll continue to do so. Am I disappointed? No. I like our ballclub. We just have to go out there an continue to grind like we have."

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry made a major deal two weeks ago, bringing in catcher Jason Kendall. He didn't think another major deal was going to be in the cards Tuesday.

"If there was something, it wouldn't have been huge," Hendry said. "What happened is kind of what I expected. We would have liked to have done one thing to maybe augment the bench. A role type of player. But I have a lot of faith in the guys we have. At the end of the day, one deal that we did pursue didn't get made, and the player didn't get moved."

Hendry hopes the return of Kerry Wood (shoulder tendinitis) in the bullpen by the end of the week will work out better than a trade.
