In corresponding roster moves, infielder Daryle Ward was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right calf and right-handed pitcher Sean Gallagher was optioned to Iowa. In addition, Wade Miller has had his rehabilitation assignment transferred to Iowa.
Dempster, 30, landed on the 15-day disabled list June 26 (retroactive to June 23) with a left oblique strain. He made two scoreless rehabilitation appearances with Iowa, July 17-19, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out four in 2.0 innings of work. For the Cubs this season, Dempster has gone 1-3 with 16 saves and a 3.38 ERA (13 ER/34.2 IP) in 33 games. The 10-year major league veteran is 16-for-18 in save opportunities this year while his 75 career saves rank fourth in Cubs franchise history.
Moore (Watch Video), 23, is hitting .266 (76-for-286) with 16 home runs and 61 RBI in 90 games for Iowa this season. He belted five homers in a four-game stretch, July 14-17, and has driven in 14 runs while batting .455 (10-for-22) over his last six games for the I-Cubs. The left-handed batter hit .300 in June, going 27-for-90 with seven home runs and 19 RBI while producing a .398 on-base percentage. Moore made his major league debut with Chicago last season, hitting .263 (10-for-38) in 16 September contests.
Ward, 32, strained his right calf attempting to field a Pedro Feliz infield pop-up in the second inning yesterday vs. San Francisco. The left-handed hitter is batting .333 (21-for-63) with eight RBI in 47 games for Chicago this season, his first with the club after he signed with the team as a free agent this past off-season. He has walked 15 times, compared to 14 strikeouts, and has gone 6-for-25 (.240) with seven walks as a pinch-hitter.
Gallagher, 21, picked up his first career save Wednesday vs. San Francisco, tossing the final 4.0 innings of a 12-1 victory at Wrigley Field. Originally drafted by the Cubs in the 12th round of the 2004 Draft, Gallagher has posted a 5.73 ERA (7 ER/11.0 IP) in five relief appearances with the big league club. Between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa this season, he has gone 8-3 with a 3.47 ERA (27 ER/70.0 IP) in 13 starts.
Miller, 30, landed on the 15-day disabled list April 23 with middle back spasms and most recently saw action in a rehabilitation outing with Single-A Peoria on July 15. He tossed 3.0 innings, allowing two earned runs while walking none and striking out five against Quad Cities.
