One of the Cubs’ two first-round draft picks came to terms with the organization over the weekend and is set to report to Mesa, Ariz.

“I think the Cubs are a great organization and I’m looking forward to joining them,” Josh Donaldson, the club’s first-round supplemental draft pick from Auburn, told on Sunday.

“Hopefully, I’ll have some success in the next few years.”

Donaldson, 21, was drafted 48th overall by the Cubs after batting a team-best .349 with 11 home runs and 54 RBIs in 55 games with Auburn in 2007.

A right-handed batter, Donaldson initially came to Auburn as a shortstop/pitcher before making the move to third base his freshman year in the SEC. He later made the move to catcher, where he spent the final two years of his collegiate career.

“For a guy that’s only been catching two seasons now, he’s made tremendous strides,” said Auburn head baseball coach Tom Slater. “With Josh, on the days he isn’t catching, the Cubs are getting a very solid third baseman.”

Donaldson is scheduled to report to Arizona June 24.

The Cubs have now signed 23 of their 50 selections from the 2007 draft.
