The Cubs wasted little time in selecting their next player of the future Thursday. Chicago chose prep third baseman Josh Vitters with their first-round pick in the annual First-Year Player Draft.

Vitters, listed at 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, batted .390 in 24 games with Cypress (Calif.) High School this past season.

“He encompasses all of the great attributes that hitters have: bat speed, hand-eye coordination,” Cypress head coach John Weber said of Vitters.

A right-handed batter, Vitters hit nine home runs, 29 RBIs, six doubles, and two triples during his final prep season.

He walked 14 times and struck out six times.
