Rocky Cherry Promoted to Chicago

Cherry moves up

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Rocky Cherry from Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding roster move, the Cubs placed right-handed pitcher Wade Miller on the 15-day disabled list with middle back spasms.

Cherry, 27, has a 3.86 ERA (4 ER/9.1 IP) and three saves in seven relief appearances for the I-Cubs this season while walking none and striking out 12. This spring, Cherry went 1-1 with a 1.46 ERA (2 ER/12.1 IP) and five saves in 12 games with the Big League club.

In 88 career minor league outings (39 starts), Cherry has produced a 3.76 ERA (116 ER/278.0 IP) going 17-13 with five saves. Last season, he spent a majority of the year with Double-A West Tenn, striking out 50 and walking just 14 while going 4-1 with a two saves and a 2.22 ERA (12 ER/48.2 IP). His performance earned him a spot on the 2006 Southern League Midseason All-Star team.

Originally selected by the Cubs in the 14th round of the 2002 Draft, Cherry made his pro debut in 2003, going a combined 7-2 with a 2.38 ERA (22 ER/83.1 IP) in 18 games (14 starts) between Single-A Boise and Single-A Lansing.

Cherry, who will wear number 57, is looking to make his Major League debut and is available for tonight's game vs. Milwaukee at 7:05 p.m. CT.

Miller, 30, is 0-1 with a 10.54 ERA (16 ER/13.2 IP) in three starts for the Cubs this season. He originally signed with the Cubs as a minor league free agent January 21, 2006.
