Piniella's Lineup

Piniella's Lineup

The Cubs had another unusual batting order on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field after playing a night game in Atlanta on Thursday night.

Because manager Lou Piniella wanted a "rested" lineup on the field, be batted Cliff Floyd second for the first time this year, started Jacque Jones in center field for the second time this season and started backup catcher Henry Blanco.

All week Piniella has been making switches and trying to get a handle on where his players will be best suited both on the field and in the lineup.

Piniella doesn't foresee making so many switches in the future.

"If you look at all of our players except for Blanco -- everybody has gotten a lot of at-bats early," Piniella said. "Everybody has gotten a chance to play. Sooner (rather) than later, we'll settle on set lineups. I'm not going to be switching around all summer, I'll tell you that. We'll get it down specifically to what we want and go from there."

CARDINALS 2, CUBS 1: Cubs killer Preston Wilson hit his 17th homer in 54 career games against the team when he parked a two-run shot over the left-field fence in the seventh to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead. The Cubs offense, which generated just six hits, didn't help losing pitcher Ted Lilly (1-2), who gave up two runs on four hits in seven innings.

NOTES, QUOTES

  • LHP Ted Lilly had another strong outing, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts in seven innings, but the Cubs' offense let him down and he left the game trailing 2-1.

  • 3B Aramis Ramirez hit safely in his 12th straight game this year and, combined with a six-game streak from last year, has an 18-game streak overall.

  • CF Alfonso Soriano, who is nursing a strained left hamstring, will try running on Saturday before a game with St. Louis. He said he hopes to be able to play in Saturday's game, but manager Lou Piniella is looking at Monday or Tuesday for Soriano's return.

  • LF Cliff Floyd batted in the No. 2 hole on Friday for the first time this year as manager Lou Piniella continues to hold auditions for that spot. So far, six players have batted second for the Cubs in 16 games.

  • OF Jacque Jones started in center field for the second time this season Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field, replacing Felix Pie, who played in a night game in Atlanta on Thursday. When injured CF Alfonso Soriano returns to the lineup, there will be a logjam of outfielders if the Cubs decide to keep Pie on the parent club. Rumors have surfaced the Cubs might try to trade Jones.
