Pie's First Impression Positive

Pie batted .444 in 11 games at Iowa this season

Felix Pie made quite a first impression. The Cubs promoted the heralded center field prospect on Tuesday, one day after Alfonso Soriano strained his left hamstring.

Soriano will not go on the disabled list, but he likely will be unavailable until at least Sunday.

The 22-year-old Pie doubled off legend Greg Maddux in the fifth inning and threw out Russell Branyan at the plate in the 10th inning to get the Wrigley Field crowd going.

Soriano said that he would consider moving to left field and allow Pie to play center if the rookie continues to play well.

"Whatever the manager (Lou Piniella) wants to do with us. ... I played left field last year," Soriano said. "All three outfield positions are the same. You have to catch the ball. Any position Lou wants me to play is OK. Felix is a special kid. He's a very good athlete and a very good player."

PADRES 4, CUBS 3 (14 innings): Geoff Blum doubled home Khalil Greene in the 14th inning off of struggling left-handed reliever Will Ohman (0-1, 9.00 ERA) Tuesday at Wrigley Field. The Cubs were held to eight hits on the day and went without a hit from the sixth through the 12th inning.
