RHP Kerry Wood didn't pitch for the first couple of days of training camp because he injured his right side slipping in his hot tub at home. Wood said the injury is not serious, and he should start throwing on Feb. 19 or 20. Wood has been moved to the bullpen this year because he had problems after right shoulder surgery in 2005 lingered into the 2006 campaign.
INF Ryan Theriot came to camp early to work out in the outfield. He is slated as a backup second baseman and shortstop but figures if he can show new manager Lou Piniella and the new coaching staff he can also play the outfield, it would help his chances of making the club.
RHP Jae Kuk Ryu was traded to Tampa Bay for minor league OF Andrew Lopez and minor league RHP Gregory Reinhard. Ryu, who made 10 big-league appearances last season, including one start, was one of several pitchers hoping to land the fifth spot in the starting rotation.
RHP Jeff Samardzija, a former Notre Dame wide receiver who gave up football to sign a five-year deal with the Cubs, was officially added to the 40-man roster after the Cubs traded RHP Jae Kuk Ryu.
