Cubs and Prior

Posted Jan 31, 2007

The Chicago Cubs today announced that the club has agreed to a one-year deal with right-handed pitcher Mark Prior, thus avoiding salary arbitration.

Prior, 26, owns a 42-29 career record with a 3.51 ERA (256 ER/657.0 IP) in 106 starts since making his Major League debut in 2002. His 757 strikeouts in 657.0 innings translates into 10.37 strikeouts per 9.0 innings of work, the highest rate for any Cubs starter in franchise history (minimum 500.0 IP).

The Cubs' first round selection (second pick overall) in the 2001 First-Year Player draft, Prior battled injuries in 2006 and appeared in nine games for Chicago. He was on the disabled list March 27-June 18 with a right subscapularis strain then landed back on the shelf July 5 through the end of the season with a strained left oblique.

Prior went 11-7 with a 3.67 ERA (68 ER/166.2 IP) in 27 starts with Chicago in 2005.
