Patterson Promoted to Iowa

Second baseman Eric Patterson and left-hander Carmen Pignatiello were promoted to Triple-A Iowa, the Diamond Jaxx announced Saturday.

A Southern League all-star in his first full Double-A season, Patterson was batting .263 with eight home runs, 22 doubles and nine triples in 121 games at West Tenn. The 23-year-old was also named to the 2006 All-Star Futures Game at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

Patterson was the Cubs' eighth-round pick from Georgia Tech in the 2004 draft. Over his last 40 games with the Jaxx, he batted .226.

Pignatiello spent most of last year at Triple-A, but found himself back at West Tenn for the start of '06. A former starter with the organization and 2000 draft pick, he appeared in 37 games with the Jaxx in relief this season, going 3-1 with a 2.88 ERA and 69 strikeouts to 18 walks in 56 1/3 innings.

The southpaw garnered a brief promotion to Iowa earlier this year, but returned to West Tenn after just two appearances. He also made one start for the Jaxx on April 18 in the second game of a doubleheader against Mississippi.

To coincide with the moves, right-hander Hugo Castellanos was demoted from Iowa to West Tenn. The 26-year-old came over from the Triple-A Mexican League and had appeared in just two games for Iowa.

Castellanos appeared in 22 games, including 17 starts, for Potros de Tijuana. He was 6-0 with a 3.17 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 110 2/3 innings earlier this year, and had previously spent a half-season with the Jaxx in 2004.

He and pitcher Mac Suzuki joined the Cubs from Tijuana on Aug. 11. Recommended Stories
