Walker, Maddux Traded

The Cubs reportedly tried unsuccessfully to unload second baseman Todd Walker this past off-season. Before Monday's 3 p.m. (CDT) trade deadline, they finally found their ransom in the form of a familiar trading "com-padre" of late: San Diego.

The Padres (55-50) and Cubs (43-61) made their second trade in recent weeks, with San Diego acquiring reliever Scott Williamson for two low-level pitching prospects in Fabian Jimenez and Joel Santo on July 22. Walker leaves the Cubs after two-plus seasons in which he garnered the majority of playing time at second base.

The Cubs received a 19-year-old prospect, Jose Ceda, from the Padres' Arizona Rookie League team in return for the 33-year-old's services.

Ceda was 4-2 with a 1.50 ERA in 13 games, including nine starts, for the DSL Padres in 2005. He threw two complete games and struck out 83 while walking 29 in 60 innings, holding opposing hitters to a .174 average against.

This season, in 23 innings in the Arizona League, Ceda is 2-0 with a 5.09 ERA. He struck out 31 and walked 13, with opposing hitters batting .235 against the right-hander. Over his last six appearances with the team, he has two wins and a 2.00 ERA with 26 strikeouts and 10 walks in a span of 18 innings.

As reported by MadFriars.com, the Padres equivalent to Inside The Ivy on the Scout.com network: "Jose Ceda has wowed the Padres with a 99 MPH fastball. He routinely works in the mid-nineties."
