Brownlie, the Cubs’ first overall choice in the 2002 draft, began the year in the bullpen and had an ERA of almost 13 points in relief. He made one start, lasting four innings and giving up three runs and five hits. Opponents were batting a hefty .429 against him in 11 2/3 innings.
To coincide with the roster move, right-hander Federico Baez has been promoted from West Tenn to Iowa. Baez was with the Iowa staff from April 17-22, where he appeared in one game. At Double-A, he was 1-0 with a 3.94 ERA in eight games.
Brownlie last pitched at Double-A in 2004, where he made 26 starts and was 9-9 with a 3.36 ERA.
Alan Dunn, Brownlie’s pitching coach at Iowa, said he thought Brownlie had been throwing better in recent outings and was showing better movement on his pitches.
“It’s simply a matter of executing his pitches,” Dunn said. “His mistakes have been hit obviously, but he’s also made some good pitches that were hit ... He’s just going to have to pitch through this spell. Once he gets some success under his belt this year, he’ll be fine.”
