Jones is in the first year of a three-year deal and was hitting just .209 after his first 18 games.
"You are always concerned about it and how they are going to handle it," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said Tuesday. "It doesn't help the situation any. He's only played a few games. It's a period of adjustment for anybody to play in a new league. You don't know the pitchers or the umpires or the philosophy of the pitching coach on the other side. We just have to give it some time.
"When I got to Los Angeles, I was booed by 50,000 people every day. The next year, I hit 30 home runs. After that, I was on the all-time Dodger team. Performance changes everything."
REPLAY: Rookie southpaw pitcher Sean Marshall, who was making just his fourth major league start, threw seven shutout innings and allowed just two hits Tuesday to help the Cubs to their third straight victory with a 3-1 triumph over Florida at chilly Wrigley Field.
With temperatures in the high 30-degree range, the offense knew runs would come at a premium against star pitcher Dontrelle Willis, yet Matt Murton was able to single home Aramis Ramirez in the fourth inning and double home Michael Barrett in the seventh. Murton came home on Jerry Hairston Jr.'s squeeze bunt.
NOTES, QUOTES
--2B Jerry Hairston Jr., who figures to pick up more playing time after Todd Walker moved to first base, had a successful squeeze bunt in the seventh inning of Tuesday's 3-1 victory over Florida but was picked off of first a few minutes later.
--LF Matt Murton went 6-for-30 on the Cubs' last road trip. But he hit a huge two-run single in the eighth inning of the team's 6-3 come-from-behind victory over Florida at Wrigley Field on Monday night, and he added three more hits and two RBIs in Tuesday night's 3-1 victory over the Marlins.
Manager Dusty Baker said he had a long talk with Murton and said the outfielder was "thinking too much" at the plate. He feels if Murton settles down and reacts, rather than trying to outguess the opposing pitchers, Murton should beef up his average.
(Editor's Note: Gee, wonder which of Dusty's two incompetent coaches caused him to "think too much" in the first place?)
--RHP Kerry Wood (shoulder and knee surgery) is set to pitch in a Rookie League game in Arizona on Wednesday. He likely will pitch three innings. Wood was supposed to face Rookie League players last Thursday, but that appearance was scratched when he developed tightness under his right armpit.
--RHP Mark Prior (shoulder discomfort) is set to face hitters for the second time this year on Thursday. He likely will throw 40 to 50 pitches in batting practice in Arizona.
--RHP Wade Miller (shoulder surgery) faced hitters for the third time this season when he threw a batting practice session in Arizona, but he felt fatigue. The Cubs will back him off a few days. The earliest he can come off the 60-day disabled list would be June 1.
