Of the Cubs’ contingent on the Arizona Fall League’s Mesa Solar Sox roster this year, OF Matt Murton and 1B/OF Brandon Sing have stood out the most through the first week. Murton has seven hits in his first 11 at-bats with six runs scored and a league-best six doubles in three games alone. Also in three games, Sing is 5-for-10 with three doubles.
Also representing the Cubs are SS Buck Coats and 2B Eric Patterson. Coats, a member of the “taxi squad” and limited to Wednesday and Saturday games only, was 2-for-5 with an RBI double in his only appearance. Patterson has three hits in 15 at-bats with four runs scored.
Pitchers David Aardsma and John Koronka have each appeared from the Solar Sox bullpen. In three games, Aardsma has allowed six runs (all earned) in 4 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking four. Koronka has appeared in two games without allowing a run. He has struck out five and walked one in three innings.
Forever-touted right-hander Angel Guzman made one start, allowing two runs and six hits in four innings. Guzman struck out five without allowing a walk.
