The Cubs promoted LHP Rich Hill from Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, less than a year after minor league baseball's current strikeout leader spent last season in A-ball at Daytona.

Hill, a 25-year-old University of Michigan alumnus, had amassed 119 strikeouts this season between Iowa and Double-A West Tenn. He has walked 27 this year after giving up a Florida State League high 71 walks in 2004.

Hill told Inside The Ivy last month that he credits the mental side of his game and finetuning his release point for most of the success he's had in 2005.

“There’s a book called Thinking Body, Dancing Mind (Taosports for Extraordinary Performance in Athletics, Business, and Life),” said Hill. “It’s a spiritual book for the most part. I don’t really get into that particular side of it, but I use the information in the book and transfer it onto the field.

“This year, I have been more consistent with being able to throw the ball from the same release point every time,” Hill said. “Last year, I was struggling with my release point a lot during the second half. As soon as I got done figuring that out, I felt like I had new life.”

Hill was 5-4 with a 3.55 ERA in 76 1/3 innings combined between Iowa and West Tenn this season. A season ago with Daytona, he finished 7-6 with a 4.03 ERA in 28 appearances between the starting rotation and bullpen.

The Cubs optioned left-hander John Koronka back to Iowa to make room for Hill on the 25-man roster. Koronka allowed six runs and seven hits against the Marlins on Monday night in 4 1/3 innings. He was 1-2 with a 7.63 ERA in three starts with Chicago.
