Mitre hoping to become fifth starter

<B>MESA, Ariz.</B> - Sergio Mitre is clearly in the race to become a member of the Cubs' 2005 starting rotation. For the second consecutive year, Mitre might be looking at a roster spot because of injuries to Mark Prior and now Kerry Wood. When Spring Training began over three weeks ago, Mitre was just fighting for a spot on the 25-man roster. Now the 24-year-old hurler's aspirations have changed.

"I'm not exactly sure what my role is," said Mitre. "I want to start and I don't want to be in Triple-A (Iowa). I think I am ready. Spring Training has been pretty good for me so far." Mitre started nine games a season ago, going 2-4 with a 6.51 ERA as the fifth starter before Prior returned from an Achilles' injury June 4.
