Jorge Soler, Albert Almora promoted

The Cubs top two outfield prospects—Jorge Soler and Albert Almora—were have been promoted as Soler heads to AAA Iowa and Almora is off to Smokies Park.

Cubs prospects are on the move. Jorge Soler has been promoted to AAA Iowa and Albert Almora has advanced to AA Tennessee as the Cubs inch their top players closer to the big leagues.

Most of Soler’s season has been spent rehabbing hamstring injuries but when he’s gotten on the diamond, the 22-year-old Cuban has been special. In 22 AA games, Soler hit .415/.494/.882 with six homers, nine doubles and a triple. He also walked 12 times with 15 strikeouts.

Soler was signed by the Cubs in 2012 to a nine-year, $30 million contract out of Cuba. He made his pro debut in 2012 at Mesa and was promoted to Peoria. Last year, Soler played in 55 games in Daytona (.281/.343/.467) before missing the second half of the season with a left shin fracture. He played in the Arizona Fall League, recording hits in 18-of-20 games (.271).

Albert Almora's first full season got off to a rocky start as the 19-year-old hit .235/.268/.319 over his first 30 games for Daytona but has picked it up since then. In his last 59 games, the Florida native is batting .306/.326/.448 with six homers, 13 doubles, 38 RBI and 39 runs. He hit for the cycle on July 14 vs. Jupiter.

Almora was the first player drafted by the Cubs new front office in 2012, the sixth pick overall. He homered in his pro debut for Mesa and broke his hamate bone in spring training to start 2013. He hit .329/.376/.466 in 61 games at Kane County but ended the season on the DL with a leg injury.

Chicago Cubs sent Mike Olt back to AAA after starting the season with the North SIders. Olt leads all NL rookies with 12 homers but is hitting .139 with 84 strikeouts in 72 games. Tsuyoshi Wada has been recalled from Iowa to take Olt’s spot on the roster.

Tennessee could be getting back a pair of starters as Ivan Pineyro made his first rehab start for Mesa last night and C.J. Edwards is expected to take the mound tonight in Mesa.
