Cubs July 20 Minor League Recap

Addison Russell blasted a pair of home and knocked in a career-high six runs as the 20-year-old led tennessee to victory. Albert Almora had four hits and Billy McKinney knocked in three help Daytona to their second straight win over Palm Beach. Boise’s first-half playoff hopes were ruined with a 6-0 loss while Iowa and Kane County both lost.

Roster Moves, News, Notes

Cubs have released two players from their Mesa roster. Yorvit Torrealba, a veteran MLB catcher signed to a minor league deal, has been given his release. He appeared in four games in Mesa, going 4-13 with three doubles. The Cubs have also parted ways with Dominican infielder Dalfis Ortiz. The switch-hitting second baseman hit .343/.416/.506 in 47 games in the DSL last year but got injured and didn’t play after July. He was brought stateside for the first time this spring and was just 1-8 in four games at Mesa. The 22-year-old has been picked up by the Royals and is playing in the DSL.

AAA—Round Rock 4, Iowa 3

Round Rock hit a homer in the 11th to tie the game and then won it with a walk-off single in the 12th to avoid the sweep/

At the Dish: Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the second as Lars Anderson knocked in Chris Valaika (.291) with a double and Logan Watkins (.272) followed with a RBI single. The Cubs went ahead in the 11th when Kris Bryant (.324) doubled and scored on Rafael Lopez’ (.272) RBI single. Javier Baez (.252) extended his hitting streak to 14 games with three hits, all singles. Bryant finished 1-6.

On the Hill: Chris Rusin scattered 10 hits over seven innings as the left held the Express to two runs. He threw 96 pitches in the out and fanned five.....The Cubs bullpen of the future was on display the next three innings as Arodys Vizcaino fanned two in a scoreless seventh and Armando Rivero added two more shutout fames with 3 K. Marcus Hatley (2-4, 3.38 ERA) got charged with a blown save in the 11th, allowing a homer to former Cub Brent Lillibridge, and then allowed the game-winner in the 12th.

I-Cubs Notes: Javier Baez come into the night with a 13-game hitting streak and was batting .288/.333/.692 with 5 HR and 14 RBI during the streak.....Cubs host New Orleans at Principal Park as Dan Straily makes his third start since joining the Cubs in the trade with Oakland.


AA—Tennessee 10, Huntsville 3

Addison Russell hit two homers, one a grand slam, as the Cubs prospect had his coming out party in his 11th game with the organization.

At the Dish: Russell (.262) gave the Cubs a 2-0 lead in the first when he launched a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left-centerfield. With the base load in the fifth, he smacked a 3-2 pitch deep over the left field wall. The six RBI are a career-high for the 20-year-old.....Emilio Bonifacio (.250) snapped an 0-11 streak with a single in the first and finished 4-5, all singles.....Christian Villanueva (.272) smacked his 4th homer over the centerfield wall in the seventh,a two runs hot, and Jonathan Mota (3-for-5) added a two-run double in the 9th. Jae-Hoon Ha (.219) went 2-5 and Jorge Soler (.397) was 1-3 with two runs and two walks.

On the Hill: Jeffry Antigua got the start and went four innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks. He threw 66 pitches and fanned one....P.J. Francescon got the win, giving up a run in 2.1 innings. Andrew McKirahan worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and Zach Cates pitched a scoreless ninth.


High A—Daytona 9, Palm Beach 1

Every starter had at least one hit as the D-Cubs took the opening game against the Cardinals affiliate.

At the Dish: Albert Almora (.281) was 4-5 and scored twice to lead the offense. Marco Hernandez (.285) and Kyle Schwarber (.350) both had two hits and two RBI while Wilson Contreras (.239) went 1-4 with 2 RBI. Billy McKinney (.275) was 1-5 but gave the D-Cubs the lead with a three-run double in the first. Rock Shoulders (.215) had two hits.

On the Hill: Felix Pena (3-6, 3.16 ERA) had longest outing since April 14 as the 24-year-old right-hander threw seven innings and fanned seven. He allowed four hits, one leaving the yard for the Cardinals only run. Zack Godley and Austin Kirk finished off Palm Beach each tossing a scoreless inning.

D-Cubs Notes: Jose Rosario (4-6, 5.24 ERA) gets the ball in the second game of the series.


Low A—Great Lakes 9, Kane County 5

Kane County dropped their first series of the second half as the Loons won for the second straight day.

At the Dish: Kane County jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead, two coming on Jacob Rogers’ 10th homer. Shawon Dunston (.258) singled, took third on Ben Carhart’s double and scored on a wild pitch. Cael Brockmeyer (.315) doubled and had a RBI single in the 9th. Carlos Penalver (.215) went 1-3 with a RBI while Rogers (.269) singled and scored in the 9th.

On the Hill: After being pushed back two days, Tyler Skulina (4-6, 3.38 ERA) allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk. Skulina left a lot balls up and got hit hard, one leaving the yard. He fanned three and didn’t make it out of the third. Michael Heesch had his best outing since coming off the DL, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings with six punchouts in his 12th game. James Pugliese and Corbin Hoffner both gave up two runs in an inning.

Cougars Notes: The Cougars look to salvage the final game of the series on Monday morning as they send Daury Torrez (9-4, 2.81 ERA) to the mound.


Short-Season—Salem-Keizer 6, Boise 0

Boise was eliminated from the first half title as Giants prospect Jose Reyes held the Hawks to one hit through eight shutout innings

At the Dish: The only hit off Reyes was a single from Jason Vosler in the sixth. Boise got on the board in the ninth on a RBI single from Danny Canela. Rashad Crawford was hitless and had his streak snapped at 19 games.

On the Hill: Tyler Ihrig (4-1, 4.50 ERA) worked a career-high seven innings as the left-hander gave up six runs, four earned, on nine hits and a walk. He got nine ground ball outs and fanned one....Ryan Williams fanned three in two scoreless frames.

Hawks Notes: Hillsboro clinched the first half title with a win and the Boise loss.


Arizona Rookie League—Angles 8, Cubs

Angels scored in four of the first five innings to beat the Cubs.

At the Dish: CF Kevonte Mitchell has hit leadoff the last two games and the 2014 12th round pick went 2-5 with a RBI. SS Bryant Flete had two hits and scored once while 2B Andrew Ely plated the Cubs other run. DH Ho-young Son was 1-4 with a run.

On the Hill: Dillon Maples made his fourth start and while he only allowed one hit, had trouble locating the strike zone. He walked two, hit two, and threw three wild pitches, two allowing runs to score. Maples fanned four and worked three innings, the second straight time he’s gone three frames.....Carson Sands, the Cubs fifth round pick this year, made his third appearance and allowed his first runs.. The left-hander yielded four runs, one earned, on four hits and a walk. The 19-year-old Florida native fanned two for the third straight game...Alberto Diaz pitched the final 4-2 innings, allowing two unearned runs on a hitter and two walks.
