Cubs June 15 Minor League Recap

Boise won their third straight as top pick Kyle Schwarber hit his second homer and Justin Marra added a three-run blast. Iowa snapped a six-game skid behind the right-arm of Kyle Hendricks and the bat of Javier Baez, who smacked his 10th homer. Elliot Soto's walk-off single game gave Tennessee a 7-6 win while Kane County's struggles in Beloit continue.

Roster Moves, News, Notes

Duane Underwood was activated from the DL for Kane County and made the start on Sunday. RHP Josh Davis was sent from Kane County to Boise to make room for Underwood.......Tennessee's Corey Black was activated from the DL and the right-hander made the start for the Smokies on Sunday. OF John Andreoli was placed on the DL retroactive to June 11 and will miss the Southern League All-Star game.....RHPs Carlos Llano and Yomar Morel have been added to Boise roster and both made their U.S. debuts on Sunday night. Llano, 22, threw 39.2 innings in the DSL last year (6-1 2.95 ERA, 17 BB, 48 K) and Morel, 20, logged 27.2 frames in the DSL in 10 games (1-1, 1.63 ERA, 26 K, 4 BB).

AAA—Iowa 4, Sacramento 3

Kyle Hendricks tossed seven solid innings and Javier Baez blasted a two-run homer as Iowa snapped its six-game losing streak.

At the Dish: A RBI groundout by Rafael Lopez in the fourth and a sacrifice fly from Logan Watkins in the fifth tied the game. Baez delivered his 10th homer of the year with a two-run blast in the eighth. He also singled and stole two bases (11)....Arismendy Alcantara went 2-4 and scored twice.

On the Hill: Kyle Hendricks improved to 7-5 allowing two runs on four hits and two walks in seven frames. He fanned six and threw 104 pitches, 65 for strikes. Zac Rosscup surrendered a run in the eighth and Marcus Hatley recorded his first career AAA save with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth.

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa is back on the diamond on Monday afternoon with a 1:50 p.m. CST start in Sacramento as Chris Rusin (4-8 3.86 ERA) gets the start.


AA—Tennessee 7, Mississippi 6

Elliot Soto's walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th gave Tennessee the come-from-behind win over Mississippi in the final game before the all-star break.

At the Dish: Taylor Davis led off the 11th with single and took second when Jae-Hoon Ha reached on an error by the third baseman. After pinch-hitter Joe Gardner was unable to advance the runners with a bunt, Soto delivered the walk-off single to right, scoring Davis........The Smokies got a gift in the bottom of the ninth as with two outs, Ha hit a ground ball back to the mound and the pitcher promptly threw the ball over the first baseman's head, allowing two runs to score to tie the game. A sacrifice fly by Kris Bryant and a RBI single from Rubi Silva plated the first two runs of the ninth as the Smokies sent 10 hitters to plate......Anthony Giansanti, Stephen Bruno and Silva all had three hits. Kris Bryant was 1-4 to extended his hitting streak to 10 games and his on-base streak to 20.

On the Hill: Corey Black made his first start since being hit on wrist by a line drive back on June 1. The right-hander threw 57 pitches in three innings, striking out five while allowing an unearned run on two hits, a walk, and a hit batter......The final game before the all-star break, the Smokies used five pitchers out of the bullpen. Zach Cates tossed two scoreless frames but Eduardo Figueroa let the first five hitters of the seventh reach base and they all scored. Figueroa gave up four hits and walk. Lendy Castillo got charged with allowing two inherited runners to score in relief of Figueroa but worked two scoreless innings. Arodys Vizcaino worked a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts. Armando Rivero got the win as the Cuban right-hander tossed two scoreless frames with three strikeouts and also picked off a runner at first.

Smokies are on a three-day all-star break as 3B Kris Bryant, P Hunter Cervenka, P Armando Rivero, and 2B Stephen Bruno have been selected to represent Tennessee and the Cubs organization. OF John Andreoli is on the DL and will miss the game while C Rafael Lopez has been promoted to AAA.

High A—Daytona

Had the day off and get back in action on Monday hosting Tampa in the final three games of the first half.


Low A—Beloit 5, Kane County 4—12 innings

The first-half Western Division champs closed out the first half by getting swept in Beloit as the Snappers hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 11th after tying the game with two runs in the 9th. Cougars are 0-6 in Beloit.

At the Dish: A two-run homer by Yasiel Balaguert (5) and a solo shots by Jordan Hankins (3) and Jacob Rogers (6) were the only runs of the ball game for Kane County. Balaguert had three hits while Hankins and Rogers both finished with two.

On the Hill: Duane Underwood made his first start since June 2 as the 19-year-old right-hander tossed two frames. He allowed two hits and a walk with a strikeout......Michael Wagner surrendered a solo homer in three innings to go along with three strikeouts....... Michael Heesch blanked the Snapper for two no-hit frames with a punchout.....James Pugliese got charged with his first blown save as the Snappers scored two unearned runs in the ninth courtesy of a two-base error by Balaguert. Pugliese worked three innings with four punchouts. After the Cougars took a 4-3 lead in the 12th on Rogers' homer, Zak Hermans allowed a leadoff singled and then a two-run homer that ended the game.

Cougars Notes: The Cougars have the next three days off as 3B Jordan Hankins and pitchers Jose Arias and Paul Blackburn head to West Michigan for the all-star game. C Will Remillard was also named to the west squad but is on the DL.


Short-Season—Boise 11, Tri-City 9

Boise scored eight runs in the final three innings to rally for their third straight win.

At the Dish: Cather Justin Marra hit a three-run homer homer in the sixth and Kyle Schwarber blasted a solo shot in the third to help lead the Hawks' offense. Kevin Brown's two-out double tied the game in the seventh and Boise scored four times in the 8th, and took the lead for good on Zak Blair's RBI single.......Rashad Crawford was 2-4, scored twice, knocked in a run and stole a base. Schwarber was 1-2 with two RBI and David Bote singled, walked twice and scored twice. Brown finished with two RBI adn Giuseppe Papaccio scored twice after reaching on single and a walk.

On the Hill:.19-year-old Trevor Clifton made his NWL debut Sunday night as the right-hander tossed a career-high 4.1 innings and also set a career mark with five punchouts. After retiring the first six hitters, four on strikes, the Dust Devils scored three times in the third as two walks come around to score. Clifton finished with four walks on the night and gave up five hits, including a solo homer in the fifth.....Carlos Llano made his stateside debut working two frames. He was charged with one earned run, giving up a hit, one walk with two strikeouts.....Yomar Morel was one out away from getting out of the seventh but surrendered a three-run homer. He gave up two runs in the ninth but earned the win finishing with a line of 2.2 IP, 6 H 4 R, 3ER, 0 BB, 2 K..

Hawks Notes: RHP Josh Conway makes his pro debut Monday night.
