Cubs June 9 Minor League Recap

Rafael Lopez and Christian Villanueva hit grand slams as Iowa hammered Fresno 17-2. Kris Bryant hit his 23rd homer in a one-run loss for Tennessee while Jen-Ho Tseng returned for Kane County. Rob Zastryzny fanned a career-high nine in Daytona's loss while the DSL Cubs combined for a no-hitter.

DSL trio tosses no-hitter

Oscar De La Cruz, Deibi Torres and Aneuris Rosario combined to no-hit the Blue Jays on June 7 in the 4-0 win. De La Cruz fired the first six innings allowing one walk while fanning eight. Torres tossed two frames with two walk and a strikeout while Rosario closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth. Richard Nunez had three of the Cubs five hits while Roberto Caro, Jenner Emeteio, Carlos Jimenez and Antonio Gonzalez each had a RBI.

AAA—Iowa 17, Fresno 2

Rafael Lopez and Christian Villanueva hit grand slams as the I-Cubs whipped Fresno.

At the Dish: Rafael Lopez had a career-high seven RBI, including a grand slam, to lead the offense. Lopez and made his first AAA homer a big one,hitting the slam in the ninth......Villanueva was 2-4 and his 6th homer was a slam in the sixth. He finished with 5 RBI......Plenty of hitting stars on Monday night as seven I-Cubs collected multi-hit games in the 17-hit attack.....Javier Baez was 3-5, scored four times, tripled, hit his 8th homer and stole his 9th base.......Arismendy Alcantara was 3-6 and scored twice while Logan Watkins, Brett Jackson and Ryan Kalish all finished with two hits.

On the Hill: Tsuyoshi Wada went six innings for the win, allowing one run on eight hits and a walk. He fanned two and threw 89 pitches, 58 for strikes.....Alberta Cabrera, Carlos Pimentel and Frank Batista all pitched an inning of relief.

I-Cubs Notes: Kyle Hendricks (6-4 3.90 ERA) gets the ball Tuesday night as the I-Cubs look to make it two-in-row over Fresno........Iowa is tied with Oklahoma City for first place in the PCL's American Northern Division.


AA—Jacksonville 8, Tennessee 7

Tennessee squandered a 4-0 lead and lost in the bottom of the 10th on a walk-off homer.

At the Dish: Kris Bryant continues to tee off on Southern League pitching as he hit his 22nd homer of the season, a solo shot in the 7th. He finished the night 2-5 with two runs....Dustin Geiger is starting to take better swings at the plate as he went 2-5 and drove in a pair....Elliot Soto, Charlie Cutler, Anthony Giansanti and Jeudy Valdez all had two hits.

On the Hill: Joe Gardner cruised through the first three innings but somebody in the SL was able to push some runs across. He gave up a three-run homer in the fourth and then allowed a run in the fifth before departing. Gardner finished with a line of 4.1 IP, 5H, 4ER, 2BB 1K.....P.J. Francescon tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief but the rest of the bullpen was not as successful. Hunter Cervenka allowed two runs in 1.1 frames, Jeff Lorick got charged with his second blown save giving up a run in 1.2 innings, and Arodys Vizcaino took the loss allowing the walk-off homer in the 10th.

Smokies Notes: Tennessee has the day off and Eduardo Figueroa (0-0 0.00 ERA) will make his second start on Wednesday night.


High A—Clearwater 2, Daytona 0

Rob Zastryzny had his best outing of the season but the Clearwater arms were better.

At the Dish: Cubs were silent for eight innings and after loading the bases in the ninth, Jeimer Candelario grounded out to end the game......Willson Contreras was 2-4 and extended his hitting streak to nine games.....Marco Hernandez had two hits and Gioskar Amaya went 1-4 batting leadoff.

On the Hill: Rob Zastryzny (1-5 6.42 ERA) fanned a career-high nine hitters but gave up two runs, including a solo homer. The left-hander worked seven innings, allowing four hits and no walks......Stephen Perakslis fanned the side in his only inning of work.

D-Cubs Notes: Felix Pena will be on the mound Tuesday night as the D-Cubs head to Dunedin for a three-game set before the all-star game.


Low A—Kane County 2, Cedar Rapids 1

Kane County pitching fanned 14 Kernals as Kane County took the rubber game of the series.

At the Dish: Kane County scored both of its runs in the fourth when Jordan Hankins walked and scored on a Jacob Rogers' double. Rogers took third on a error by the right-fielder. After Cael Brockmeyer walked, Daniel Lockhart plated Rogers with a sacrifice fly. There were only five hits in the game for both teams. Lockhart had the Cougars other hit, a single.....Chicago Cubs outfielder Ryan Sweeney started for the Cougars as he made his first rehab appearance since injuring his hamstring. Sweeney went 0-2 with a walk.

On the Hill: Jen-Ho Tseng made his return to the mound after a month lay-off on the DL with a tender right shoulder. The injury was not considered serious and Tseng stayed with Kane County during his DL stint. The right-hander gave up a run in the first but was efficient in his return. Throwing a fastball in the low 90 and mixing in his curve and change-up, Tseng only threw three innings, allowing two hits with three strikeouts.....Kane County's bullpen was lights out as they shutdown the Kernals for six frames, allowing just one hit. Michael Heesch got the win, tossing 2.1 frames of shutout ball........James Pugliese continued to dominate the MWL as the right-hander fanned five in 2.2 innings of no-hit relief for his fourth hold. The right-hander had fanned 16 in his last nine innings........Tyler Bremer recorded his seventh save, working a 1-2-3 ninth with two punchouts. Kane County pitchers fanned 14 on the night.

Cougars Notes: Tyler Skulina gets the start on Tuesday night as the Cougars head to Peoria with a three-game series with the Cardinals affiliate.


Venezuelan Summer League—Tigers 9, Cubs 1

Cubs jumped out to a 1-0 lead but all the rest of the scoring was done by the Tigers.

At the Dish: Miguel Rico hit a solo homer in the first, his fourth, but that would be it as they managed only three hits the rest of the game, two of those by Luis Hidalgo and Jhonny Pereda in the first after Rice homer. Henrry Pedra singled in the fifth.

On the Hill: Cubs defense didn't help the pitchers as only two of the nine runs were earned. Mauro Vides gave up four runs on four hits in 4.2 frames in the start. Angel Mejias got charged with five unearned runs and Julio Sanchez retired the final five hitters.


Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1, Blue Jays 0

Cubs blanked the Blue Jays for the second straight game.

At the Dish: Cubs only had five hits but Roberto Caro's leadoff homer in the bottom of the first was the only run they needed.

On the Hill: Andin Diaz got the win, working six shutout innings with five punchouts. Dilson Vasquez tossed two frames and Santiago Rodriguez fanned two in the ninth fior his first save.

Cubs Notes: The game I thought got rained out, was the no-hitter I wrote about above. Not sure why it took two days for MiLB to post the box score.


Roster Moves, News, Notes

Kane County's Jen-Ho Tseng was activated from the DL and started Monday night......The Cubs have released minor league catcher Rony Rodriguez.........The Boise Hawks have released their tentative roster for the 2014 season. You can see it HERE
