AAA—Round Rock 5, Iowa 1
Iowa (21-17) could only push across one run as Round Rock (21-17) evened the series.
At the Dish: The I-Cubs tied the game in the fifth on a sac fly off the bat of Jonathan Mota, scoring Brett Jackson, who had doubled. Iowa collected nine hits but were 0-5 with RISP and left eight on. Christian Villanueva went 2-4 as every Cub starter had a hit except Mota.
On the Hill: Eric Jokisch (2-4, 4.37 ERA) worked into the seventh, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits and one walk. The left-hander fanned five in his 100-pitch effort......Marcus Hatley blanked the Express for 1.2 innings as he fanned four and Marcos Mateo gave up an unearned run in the ninth.
I-Cubs Notes: RHP Dallas Beeler (1-0 10.0 ERA) makes his third start Saturday night in Des Moines as the two teams meet in the third game of the four-game series.
AA—Mississippi 2, Tennessee 0
One of the hottest teams in baseball was shutout as three Mississippi pitchers held the Smokies to five hits.
On the Hill: While he didn't get the win, Corey Black had a solid effort, working into the sixth. The right-hander surrendered two runs on five hits and three walks. He hit two batters, fanned six and threw 92 pitches.....Tony Zych allowed an inherited run to score in the sixth and then tossed 1.2 scoreless innings......Arodys Vizcaino was his normal self Friday night, striking out the side on 12 pitches.
Smokies Notes: Quick turnaround for the two teams as Matthew Loosen (2-2 5.79 ERA) makes the start at the noon EST start on Saturday.
High A—Daytona 2, Fort Myers 1
Daytona won their third straight as Andrew McKirahan pitched out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the bottom of the ninth to earn the save.
At the Dish: Albert Almora is heating up as the center fielder figured in both Daytona runs going 2-4 to up his average to .256. Almora plated Pin-Chieh Chen (double) in the first on a RBI groundout and then singled and scored in the seventh on a double play groundout by Chadd Krist.....Bijan Rademacher and Daniel Vogelbach both singled.
On the Hill: Felix Pena ran his streak of only allowing one earned run to eight starts but only lasted four innings. Pena got seven ground ball outs and surrendered four hits with two strikeouts. He lowered his ERA to 1.47 but didn't figure in the decision.......Zach Cates (1-1 2.28 ERA) earned the win with three scoreless innings. He fanned two and allowed one hit....Andrew McKirahan recorded his second save but hit didn't come easy. After a 1-2-3 8th, the left-hander found himself in an bases loaded jam after an error, walk and single. He fanned the next two hitters and got the final batter to foul out to first to preserve the win.
D-Cubs Notes: Daniel Vogelbach returned to his hometown as he played his high school ball at Bishop Verot.
Low A—Kane County 4, Quad Cities 2
Kane County snapped their four-game losing streak behind a strong outing from RHP Paul Blackburn.
At the Dish: The Cougars scored three runs in the fifth, all coming with two outs. Trey Martin walked and scored on Daniel Lockhart's RBI double. Two straight errors allowed Lockhart to score and then Benjamin Carhart delivered a RBI single.......The Cougars added a run in the seventh when Martin singled and scored on Carlos Penalver's RBI double.....Carhart finished with two hits.
On the Hill: Paul Blackburn (4-1 2.76 ERA) fanned a season-high eight hitters as the right-hander only allowed two hits in six innings, both coming in the fourth. Blackburn only issued one free pass and retired seven hitters on ground balls........James Pugliese yielded a run on two hits in two innings of work. He fanned three and earned his second hold.......Tyler Bremer picked up his second save with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth.
Cougars Notes: Tyler Skulina (1-1 3.86 ERA) gets the start on Saturday night.
Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs
Cubs (1-3) had the day off and face the first-place Phillies (3-1) on Saturday.
Cubs left-handed reliever Zac Rosscup has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder stiffness and Jose Veras was activated. Rosscup has appeared in four games for the Cubs and not allowed a run in four innings, giving up a hit and two walks with five punchouts. Rosscup had a MRI on his shoulder and there was no structural damage, only inflammation. He is likely to rest his shoulder and then start a throwing program. Veras went on the DL with an oblique strain and made four rehab appearances in Tennessee (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 4.2 Ip, 1H, 0R, 2BB, 3K)
