Cubs May 13 Minor League Recap

Albert Almora knocks in four in Daytona's win.

Albert Almora had three doubles and knocked in four runs as Daytona snapped a seven-game losing streak. Tennessee continued its offensive onslaught of Southern League pitching, knocking out 12 hits, including Kris Bryant's 11th homer. The VSL Cubs won their first game with a ninth inning rally while Iowa and Kane County both lost.

AAA—Nashville 8, Iowa 0

Two Nashville (21-18) pitchers held Iowa (20-16) to a pair of hits and the Sounds collected 13 base knocks in the victory.

At the Dish: A Chris Rusin single in the third and a double by Logan Watkins in the ninth were the only offense for Iowa. Nashville pitching retired 15 straight at one point and Iowa didn't get a runner in scoring positions until Watkins' double in the ninth......Javier Baez went 0-4 with three strikeouts.

On the Hill: Nashville got to Rusin in the fourth, scoring four times on four hits and a hit batter. His own throwing error allowed another run to score in the sixth. He threw 87 pitches in the six inning outing, allowing eight hits to go along with six punchouts.....Alberto Cabrera surrendered a two-run homer in his two frames while Jeffry Antigua yielded a run in the ninth on three hits.

I-Cubs Notes: Cubs have Wednesday off and host Round Rock (Texas) for a four-game series beginning Thursday. Kyle Hendricks (3-3, 3.64 ERA) will face some of his former teammates in the opening game of the series.


AA—Tennessee 10, Jackson 6

The Smokies continued to roll up the offensive numbers as they added to their minor league leading totals in hits and runs in the win.

At the Dish: Tennessee scored six runs in the third, three coming on Kris Bryant's Southern League leading 11th homer. Bryant finished the game 2-5 with four RBI, and now leads SL with 33.....Stephen Bruno continued his hot pace in May as the second baseman went 4-5 with a double, triple, and knocked in two....Taylor Davis had two doubles and a triple with two runs and two RBI......Rubi Silva was 1-5 with his 24th RBI.

On the Hill: Jose Veras tossed a 1-2-3 first in his third rehab appearance and Arodys Vizcaino followed that up by striking out the side as Tennessee started the game with an inning from both relief pitchers as the threat of rain had manager Buddy Bailey making sure his relievers got work......Pierce Johnson (1-1 5.16 ERA) labored through 2.2 innings as the right-hander once again struggled with his command. Johnson threw 64 pitches, only 31 for strikes, as he walked six, gave up five hits, and was charged with four earned runs......P.J. Francescon allowed a run on 2.2 innings and earned the win to improve to 5-1 on the season with a 1.16 ERA. Francescon fanned four and walked one, the run coming on a solo homer......Armando Rivero got the final five outs but gave up two hits and two runs in the ninth. Rivero threw 23 pitches, 18 for strikes, and fanned three.

Smokies Notes: Corey Black (2-3 4.06 ERA) makes his seventh start as the same two teams meet with a 12:05 EST start.


High A—Daytona 12, Charlotte 0

Daytona snapped a seven-game losing streak, as three pitchers combined for a shutout and the D-Cubs erupted for 11 hits.

At the Dish: Cubs scored in each of the first five innings for an 11-0 lead....Albert Almora had a big night at the plate with three doubles and four RBI to up his average to .250......Zeke DeVoss (.167) scored three runs, going 2-3 with a double and a RBI.....Marco Hernandez (.313) was 2-4 with a RBI....Jeimer Candelario (.172), Bijan Rademacher (.349) and Gioskar Amaya (.308) knocked in runs.

On the Hill: Ben Wells (2-2, 3.72 ERA) turned in his best outing of the season as the right-hander twirled six shutout innings. He fanned eight, allowed three hits and got six ground ball outs for the win.....Austin Reed added two scoreless innings and Andrew McKirahan worked the ninth.

D-Cubs Notes: Yao-Lin Wang (0-5 8.44 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday morning as Daytona hosts its second Education Day at 10:35 a.m. EST.


Low A—Beloit 3, Kane County 2

Beloit scored two runs in the bottom of the 8th and beat the Cougars for the second straight game.

At the Dish: Kane County had eight hits as Carlos Penalver, Jordan Hankins and David Bote had two each......Shawon Dunston gave KC a 1-0 lead with a sac fly in the fifth and Bote added a RBI double in the 9th.

On the Hill: Daury Torrez (4-1) baffled Snapper hitters for six innings, holding Beloit scoreless on three hits and a walk. He fanned one and got nine ground ball outs. Torrez lowered his ERA to 2.88 and MWL hitters are batting .231 against him. It was Torrez' first time blanking the opposition in a start, he had been scored on in the previous six......Nathan Dorris got charged with a blown save and the loss, as the lefty gave up three runs on three walks and two hits. He fanned three.

Cougars Notes: Juan Paniagua (0-1 4.44 ERA) tries to salvage the final game of the series for Kane County.


Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 8, Rays 5

Cubs rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth to record their first VSL win.

At the Plate: Miguel Rico's three-run homer in the ninth broke a 5-5 tie and gave the Cubs the win. The Cubs scored all five runs with two outs, the first two coming on Johnny Pereda's bases loaded single......Wladimir Galindo hit a solo homer in the sixth for a 3-0 lead......Rico finished with 4 RBI, driving in a run with a sac fly.....Pereda was 3-5 and Luis Hidalgo went 2-4.

On the Mound: Harrison Bermudez got the start and went 3.2 shutout innings, allowing three hits......Julio Sanchez worked 3.1 innings but walked five and gave up four runs on two hits.......Moises Ramirez (1-0 9.00 ERA) allowed a run in the 8th and Ramon Valera earned his first save despite allowing a hit and a walk.
