Walk-off for Baez, 5/12 Cubs Recap

Javier Baez delivers walk-off single for Iowa.

Javier Baez ripped a single up the middle past a drawn in infield to give Iowa a 2-1 walk-off win in 12 innings. Tennessee, Daytona, and Kane County all lost. The Cubs placed pitching prospect Ivan Pineyro on the DL and sent former big leaguer Joel Pineiro to AA Tennessee. The Cubs are underway in the Venezuelan Summer League.

Pineyro goes on DL

Another top pitching prospect is headed to the disabled list. Ivan Pineyro joins fellow Smokie teammate C.J. Edwards on the DL with a forearm strain of his throwing arm. Acquired from the Nationals last summer for Scott Hairston, the right-hander only lasted four innings in his last start May 10, allowing nine hits, the most he's surrendered in any game since begin traded to the Cubs. In seven games this year, Pineyro (0-2 3.60 ERA) has a line of 35 IP, 37 H, 19 R, 14 ER, 17 BB, 29 K. Joel Pineiro was added to the Tennessee roster to replace Pineyro. Pineiro was recently signed as a free agent and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2011 with the Angels. The Smokies placed LHP Hunter Cervenka on the DL and activated RHP Lendy Castillo.

AAA—Iowa 2, Nashville 1

Javier Baez worked an eight-pitch at-bat into a game-wining single in the bottom of the 10th to give Iowa a 2-1 win.

At the Dish: With one out in the 10th, singles by Matt Szczur and Logan Watkins put runners on the corners, setting the table for Baez' heroics. Lars Anderson launched a solo homer over the right field wall in the 9th to send the game into extra innings. Iowa only had three hits after eight innings, one by Wada........

On the Hill: A solo homer in the second was the only blemish on another fine outing from Japanese left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada. He fanned eight in the 95-pitch outing, yielding six hits and three walks over seven innings......Marcus Hatley tossed two perfect innings, putting down four Sounds on strikes.....Eduardo Figueroa earned his first win with 1-2-3 10th.

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa is back on the diamond today at noon as LHP Chris Rusin (2-4, 3.58 ERA) takes the mound for the first time since his no-hitter.


AA—Jackson 8, Tennessee 6

Jackson scored four runs in the bottom of the 8th to rally for the win.

At the Dish: Rafael Lopez (.326) blasted a three-run homer in the Smokies five-run fourth as they took a 6-3 lead. It was the catcher's third homer........Rubi Silva tied the game in the second with a solo homer, his fourth.....Jae-Hoon Ha added a RBI single in the fourth and Jeudy Valdez doubled home Ha with two outs.......John Andreoli was 0-5 as his on-base stark was stopped at 30 games.........Kris Bryant was 0-4 with a run scored.

On the Hill: Dae-Eun Rhee pitched well enough to get the win as the right-hander held the Generals to five hits and ow walks over six innings. He surrendered four runs, three earned, and threw 99 pitches, 60 for strikes........Austin Kirk (1-1 4.20 ERA) got Jackson in order in the 7th but gave up two walks, a double and a two-run homer as they scored four times in the 8th......

Smokies Notes: Pierce Johnson (1-1 4.05 ERA) gets the start on Tuesday night at Jackson...........Jorge Soler had the day off on Monday.


High A—Charlotte 11, Daytona 5

A day off didn't help as Daytona dropped their sixth in a row and 10 of the last 11.

At the Dish: D-Cubs recorded 11 hits and drew four walks but were just 1-9 with RISP, left nine on base. and hit into a pair of double plays.......Bijan Rademacher (.356) continued his torrid pace with three hits and a RBI....Gioskar Amaya (.307) hit his first homer of the season, a solo shot in the first inning. He also walked and scored.....Marco Hernandez (.305) pushed his average back over the .300 mark with three hits and Wilson Contreras (.169) was 2-3......Pin-Chieh Chen ripped a RBI triple and Daniel Vogelbach was 1-4 with a RBI.

On the Hill: Tayler Scott pitched into the fifth, allowing five earned runs on six hits and three walks. He fanned three and allowed two homers........Michael Jensen had a tough time getting outs (only recorded two, one on a throw to the plate) as the right-hander was charged with three earned runs on four hits and two walks. He took the loss (1-1 3.94 ERA).....Starling Peralta had a quality outing holding Charlotte scoreless for 2.1 innings...Stephen Perakslis surrendered a three-run homer in the 8th, allowing three hits and two walks in his inning of work....Zach Cates was the fifth pitcher used, tossing a scoreless ninth.

D-Cubs Notes: Rob Zastryzny will miss his next schedule start as he recovers from being hit on on his pitching arm by a liner. He threw a bullpen session on Monday and felt good, according to Robbie Aaron, Daytona Cubs broadcaster.


Low A—Beloit 6, Kane County 1

Beloit pitching held Kane County to just three hits as the Snappers took the opening game of the series.

At the Dish: Cougars only managed three hits off three Beloit pitchers, two coming on back-to-back doubles by Jacob Rogers and Will Remillard for Kane County's only run in the second. Shawon Dunston added a single to extend his hitting streak to five games.

On the Hill: Tyler Skulina (1-1 3.86 ERA) cruised through the first three innings with five punchouts but ran into trouble in the fourth. After fanning the first hitter, Skulina allowed four hits and a walk as Beloit scored four times. He ended the day with a line of 5 IP, 5H, 4ER, 3B 7K.......Michael Wagner tossed the final three innings, allowing a two-run homer in the seventh. He surrendered three hits and struckout four.

Cougars Notes: After a slow start Shawon Dunston is starting to earn more playing time in the Kane County outfield. The 21-year-old is hitting .314 in his last 10 games and has reached base in eight straight games. In 23 games, he's hitting .247/.293/.377 with 12 RBI.


Venezuelan Summer League—Phillies 4, Cubs 2

Cubs opened their second season in the VSL with a 4-2 loss to the Phillies.

At the Plate: Cubs had seven hits, two each from Luis Ayala and Jose Gonzalez. Gonzalez knocked in one run with a RBI triple and Jhonny Pereda scored Humberto Garcia on a groundout.

On the Mound: Enrique De Los Rio took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits....Jesus Arias allowed a run in four innings and Salvador Jerez gave up a run in the final two frames.

Cubs Notes: The five-team VSL plays every four days and takes the fifth day off. The Cubs face the Rays on May 13, the Mariners on May 14 and the Tigers on May 15 to complete the first round of play of a 68-game schedule.
