Bryant homers in 1-0 win, 4/4 Cubs Recap

C.J. Edwards makes AA debut.

Kris Bryant belted his second homer of the season and C.J. Edwards tossed four shutout innings as Tennessee blanked Pensacola 1-0 for their first win. Memphis handled Iowa for the second straight game and Daytona fell in 10 innings.

AAA—Memphis 9, Iowa 0

Memphis (2-0) hit three homers and beat up on Iowa (0-2) pitching for the second night, blanking the I-Cubs 9-0 on two hits.

At the Plate: Iowa did draw five walks but only managed two hits, both by Matt Szczur and were 0-6 with RISP. Javier Baez continues to chase pitches out of the zone as he finished 0-4 with a pair of strikeouts. He had the same problem to start AA last year but eventually came out of it.

On the Mound: I-Cub pitching fanned 12 Redbirds Friday night. That was the good news. They also allowed three homers, four walks, nine hits and nine runs. Carlos Pimentel (0-1) was cruising along for three innings in his Cubs debut but surrendered a solo homer in the fourth and a two-run shot in the fifth....Jonathan Sanchez only got two outs in the sixth before surrounding a grand slam, the only hit he allowed as he walked three and hit a batter........Marcos Mateo (1.1 IP), Blake Parker (1 IP) and Zac Rosscup (1 IP) held Memphis hitless.

I-Cubs Notes: Alberto Cabrera cleared waivers and was added to the Iowa roster. To make room, RHP Casey Coleman was assigned to the Boise roster. Coleman told Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register that he's headed to Mesa to workout until he can sign with another team. Coleman tweeted he was thankful for playing in the Cubs organization........Kyle Hendricks makes his 2014 debut on Saturday night at Principal Park with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. CST vs. Memphis as the I-Cubs try to get their first win of the year.....Eric Jokisch will take the mound in the series finale on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.

AA—Tennessee 1, Pensacola 0

Kris Bryant hit his second homer in as many days and C. J Edwards and two relievers combined on a five-hit shutout as Tennessee (1-1) evened their record with a 1-0 win over Pensacola.

At the Plate: One swing from Kris Bryant's bat was all the offense for the Smokies as the right-hander homered off Daniel Corcino in the 7th. Not much offense as they only managed four other hits, all singles, from Zeke DeVoss, Rubi Silva, Dustin Geiger and Jeudy Valdez. Stephen Bruno was hit twice.

On the Mound: C.J. Edwards made his AA debut Friday night and tossed four shutout innings, allowing a single. It was typical Edwards, showcasing his fastball the first time though the line-up and then mixing in more curve balls the second time around. He was efficient in his work, throwing 63 pitches, 38 strikes and finished with four punchouts. He was helped on defense by a fine diving grab by RF Rubi Silva in the first. It was a solid outing for the right-hander.........P.J. Francescon got the win in relief, tossing three shutout innings. He only needed 28 pitches, 20 for strikes, as he pitched ahead in the count and to contact.......Armando Rivero, my favorite bullpen arm in the system, got the save recording the final six outs. He breezed through the 8th with a pair of punchouts but put two runners on in the ninth (seeing eye single and a hit batter) before getting a groundout to end the game.

Smokies Notes: IF/OF Anthony Giansanti was added to the Tennessee roster before Thursday night's opener.....Jorge Soler was placed on the 7-day DL with a hamstring issue and was replaced on the roster by RHP Frank Batista, who led the Smokies in saves last year........Chicago Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta is expected to make a rehab start and Corey Black will then pitch in relief on Saturday at Pensacola with first pitch at 7:30 p.m. EST.

High A—Brevard County 4, Daytona 3—10 innings

A two-out single in the top of the tenth gave Brevard County (2-0) its second straight win over Daytona (0-2), spoiling the D-Cubs home opener before a record crowd.

At the Plate: Pin-Chieh Chen was 3-3 with a RBI double and a run scored but the rest of the D-Cubs were 0-6 with RISP. DH Bijan Rademacher had a pair of hits, including a double, in his first start while Marco Hernandez and Gioskar Amaya were both 1-3. Albert Almora (0-5) is still looking for his FSL hit. Not a good night on the bases as Rock Shoulders was picked off and Rademacher thrown out trying to steal in the 10th.

On the Mound: Jose Rosario had problems finding the strike zone (same problem he had in '13 at Kane County) in the first inning as two walks and two hits plated a pair of runs. Rosario gave up two more extra base hits in the second, and ended the night tossing four frames with 5 K and 3 BB.......Michael Jensen saw his first action since the 2012 season after missing '13 with an arm injury. The 23-year-old worked two no-hit frames with three strikeouts and a walk.......LH Andrew McKirahan blanked the Manatees for two innings, allowing two hits and a walk with a strikeout.......Austin Reed worked a 1-2-3 ninth but the right-hander gave up a walk, a stolen base, and a two-out single in the 10th.

Cubs Notes: If you like following strange baseball stuff then the twitter accounts of Rob Zastryzny and Michael Jensen are your cup of tea. The two D-Cub pitchers are out to prove they can each catch 750 fly balls during batting practice to prove they "are athletes." They will keep tabs in the bio of their accounts. Jensen has the early lead 23-20.

Low A—Quad City, Kane County—POSTPONED COLD

Friday night's game was postponed due to cold conditions and the game will be made up as a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Modern Woodsman Park in Davenport, Iowa. The Cougars will send Tyler Skulina and Daury Torrez to the mound in the twin-bill. Skulina was the Cubs 4th round pick last year out of Kent Sate and Torrez, 20, made the leap from the Arizona Rookie League to the MWL.........Juan Paniagua, who had visa problems last year and didn't come to the states until July, gets the start in the series finale on Sunday and then Jen-Ho Tseng, the 19-year-old from Taiwan who signed a $1.6 million international free agent contract last year, gets the home opener start against Fort Wayne on Tuesday night.
