The Caribbean Winter League playoffs are underway and with the Cubs holding workouts in Mesa this week, several prospects are no longer playing in the winter leagues. Here's a look at who's left as well as a recap of the playoff games.
Venezuelan Winter League
Jan. 4—RHP Yoanner Negrin took the loss as Caracas (0-2) fell to La Guaria (1-2) 7-5. Negrin only lasted 3.1 innings allowing three runs on five hits and a walk. He gave up a two-run homer in the fourth and fanned two. Negrin (4-3 4.17 ERA) made 13 starts during the VWL season, adding 62 innings to the 108 he threw at AAA Iowa in 2013. Magallanes (2-1) defeated Zulia (1-1) 7-6.
Jan. 3—Zulia shutout Magallanes 2-0 in their first action in the five-team, round-robin playoffs while Caribes improved to 2-0 with a 7-6 win over La Guaria (0-2). Zulia’s RHP Yeiper Castillo earned a hold blanking Magallanes (1-1) for 2.2 innings. He allowed three hits and a walk with a strikeout.
Jan. 2—Venezuelan playoffs got under way as Magallanes beat Caracas 9-8 and Caribes defeated La Guaria 7-6 in 10 innings. No Cubs prospects saw action.
Dominican Winter League
Jan. 4—Escogido (5-2) took control of first-place with a 8-3 win over Licey (3-4). Gigantes (3-4) beat Aguilas (3-4) 4-3. Frank Batista worked a 1-2-3 ninth for Aguilas.
Jan. 3—Escogido (4-2) moved atop the playoff standings beating Licey (3-3) in a first-place matchup 4-3. Aguilas defeated Gigantes 3-2, scoring twice in the top of the eighth. Marcos Mateo, former Cub prospect selected by Arizona in the Rule 5 draft, earned his second save of the playoffs for Aguilas after recording nine during season.
Jan. 2—Licey (3-2) earned a 7-1 win over Aguilas and Escogido (3-2) downed Gigantes (2-3) 4-1. Frank Batista fanned one and issued an intentional walk in his relief appearance for Aguilas.
Mexican Pacific Winter League
Jan. 4. Mexicali (3-0) defeated Culiacan 13-6, Los Mochis (1-2) got its first win over Navojoa 4-1, and Guasave (1-2) downed Hermosillo 7-4 in the best-of-seven playoff series. No Cubs prospects are on any of the team's rosters.
Jan. 3—No games scheduled.
Jan. 2—Hermosillo, Navojoa and Mexicali all moved to 2-0 in their respective series. Hermosillo defeated Guasave 5-2, Navojoa downed Los Mochis 9-2 and Mexicali blanked Culiacan 7-0.
Puerto Rican Winter League
Jan. 4—Mayaguez moved to 2-0 in the round-robin playoffs, defeating Ponce (1-1) 4-3. Caguas (1-1) beat Carolina (0-2) 9-5. 3B Jonathan Mota was 0-3 with a strikeout in Ponce’s loss.
Jan. 3—Ponce beat Carolina 6-2 and Mayaguez defeated Caguas 4-3 in 11 innings in the opening games of the round-robin playoffs. 3B Jonathan Mota, who hit clean-up, went 2-4 with a double and a run scored in the win for Ponce.
Jan 2—No games scheduled.
Australian Baseball League
Jan. 4—Ryan Searle had his toughest outing of the season as the right-hander surrendered six runs on six hits and a walk, including a pair of homers in four innings. Searle fanned four and is now 3-2 with a 2.73 ERA in five starts (33 IP). Brisbane lost to Sydney 7-5.
