Southern League Division Finals—Tennessee 9, Birmingham 2
Eric Jokisch pitched into the 8th and Javier Baez smacked a two-run homer to lead Tennessee over Birmingham as the Smokies stayed alive in the best-of-five division series.
At the Plate: The Smokies got nine hits on the night and blew the game open with a six-run 8th. Javier Baez’s two-run homer in the first gave Tennessee its first lead of the series. While playoff stats don’t count on season totals, it was Baez’s 38th of the year. Tennessee made it 3-1 in the 5th as John Andreoli led off with a double, took third on Taylor Davis’ fly ball to center and scored on Matt Szczur’s sacrifice fly. The Smokies blew the game open in the eighth, scoring six times on five hits. Justin Bour plated the first run with RBI single and Christian Villanueva followed with another base hit, scoring Baez. After a walk, Jonathan Mota was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Andreoli ripped his second double of the game, scoring two runs, and another run scored on a throwing error by the left-fielder. Szczur, Baez, Villanueva and Andreoli all had two hits.
On the Mound: Eric Jokisch pitched into the 8th allowing two runs on five hits and two walks to earn the win. The left-hander fanned four and threw 99 pitches, 66 for strikes. Both runs scored on infield groundouts. Jokisch (11-13 3.42 ERA, 160.2 IP) was the workhouse of the staff and tossed a no-hitter Aug. 6 at Jacksonville.....RHP Armando Rivero got the final out of the 8th and Frank Batista worked a scoreless 9th, allowing a walk and a double.
The two teams will play Game 4 of the series on at 3 p.m., EST. Eduardo Figueroa (2-2 2.38 ERA) will get the start for Tennessee and Birmingham will counter with LHP Scott Snodgress (11-11 4.70).
Florida State League Finals—Daytona 2, Charlotte 0
Daytona pitching tossed it second straight shutout of the Florida State League finals as Ivan Pineyro and Frank Del Valle combined to shut down the Stone Crabs and take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series. The Cubs have not allowed an earned run in the playoffs, a streak of 36 innings.
At the Plate: The Cubs went 2-11 with RISP but both hits scored runs. Daytona got on the board with two outs in the first when Dustin Geiger ripped a single up the middle and beat the relay throw home on Dan Vogelbach’s double. They added a run in the seventh when Kris Bryant led off with a double and scored when Chadd Krist’s double that hit the first base bag. Pin-Chieh Chen, Zeke DeVoss and Krist all had two hits.
On the Mound: Using a 92 MPH and a nasty change-up, Ivan Pineyro retired the first nine hitters he faced, six on strikes. The right-hander, acquired by the Cubs in a trade with Washington, allowed three hits over seven shutout innings. He finished with seven strikeouts and walked one, coaxing nine ground ball outs. Pineyro made eight starts for Daytona going 3-1 with a 3.40 ERA throwing 45 innings with 38 strikeouts and eight walks......Frank Del Valle pitched a 1-2-3 but ran into some trouble in the ninth as the Stone Crabs got two hits and a walk to load the base. Del Valle, (3-3 2.29) who had nine saves for the D-Cubs, snared a grounder back up the middle and threw to first for the final out.
Daytona will look to clinch the Florida State League title on Sunday when they travel to Charlotte for a 5 p.m. EST start. The starting pitchers have not been named.
Northwest League Finals—Boise leads series 1-0 over Vancouver
Game 2 will be played at 2:05 p.m. MT on Sunday in Vancouver with Paul Blackburn (2-3 3.33 ERA) taking the mound for the Hawks against Vancouver’s Kyle Anderson (5-3 2.71).
LHP Matt Iannazzo has joined the Hawks playoff roster from Kane County. Iannazzo pitched in 14 games for Boise (1-1 3.21 ERA, 14 IP, 18 K, 4SV) and appeared in 10 games for the Cougars (1-1 3.55 ERA, 12.2 IP, 18 BB, 8K)
