AAA—Iowa 2, Memphis 0
Kyle Hendricks and two relievers combined to blank Memphis (64-70) as Iowa (60-74) won its first game of the home stand.
At the Plate: The Cubs only got four hits but three of them, all singles, came in the two-run fourth. Julio Borbon singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Borbon was thrown out at home on a grounder to first as Dave Sappelt reached on the fielder’s choice. Brad Nelson’s single sent Sappelt to second and Sappelt scored on Edgar Gonzalez’s base hit. Nelson, who took third on the RBI single, scored on a wild pitch. Kyle Hendricks had the other single but didn’t last long on the bases getting doubled off on a routine fly ball to left with one out.
On the Mound: Kyle Hendricks (2-0 2.42) is not a highly rated prospect, he doesn’t have over powering stuff but he knows how to pitch and get hitters out. He recorded 13 ground ball outs on Friday night throwing 94 pitches in his seven-inning gem. The Redbirds had four hits and drew one walk while Hendricks fanned three....The bullpen closed the door on Memphis as Zach Rosscup (0-1 0.00) fanned two in a 1-2-3 eighth and Eduardo Sanchez (1-1 3.41) earned his second save working around a hit batter in the ninth.
AA—Mobile 3, Tennessee 2
Mobile (73-57) scored all three runs in the top of the sixth and hung on to beat Tennessee (70-59).
At the Plate: The Smokies had nine hits on the night but their only runs came on solo homers by Rubi Silva (14) and Javier Baez (17). Silva (.289/.313/.489) entered 2013 with 10 homers in two seasons after signing out of Cuba. Baez (.310/.366/.663) now has hit 17 bombs at Daytona and Tennessee. Smokies were 0-6 with RISP and left 8 on.
On the Mound: Eduardo Figueroa (1-2 2.89) blanked the BayBears for five innings but ran into trouble in the sixth as three base hits and an error by Arismendy Alcantara plated three runs. The BayBears added another single in the inning so the run was earned....Armando Rivero (0-1 1.80) pitched out of trouble in the seventh fanning the final two hitters of the inning. He got two batters in the eighth before leaving with a line of 1.2 IP, 2H, 1BB, 3K. Hunter Cervenka (5-1 3.28) and A.J. Morris (4-2 4.98) retired both BayBears they faced, each recording a punchout.
High A—Daytona 5, Tampa 1
Daytona (31-19, 66-50) pitching fanned 13 Tampa (25-31, 53-71) hitters as the D-Cubs played their first game since Sunday.
At the Plate: Chadd Krist (.245/.345/.363) put the Cubs on the board with a three-run line drive blast in the second over the left field wall. It was Krist’s 4th homer scoring Anthony Giansanti (.293/.367/.376) and Bijan Rademacher (.264/.326/.384), who both reached with two outs. Dustin Geiger’s ground rule double scored Zeke DeVoss (.256/.400/.364) in the third after DeVoss walked and stole second. Geiger (.280/.363/.449) scored on a wild pitch. Daniel Vogelbach (.300/.382/.533) was 1-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Kris Bryant (.345/.367/.690) was 1-4 with two strikeouts.
On the Mound: C.J. Edwards (0-0 1.45 ERA) threw 80 pitches in his four innings reaching his pitch count. Edwards’ fastball was sitting 92-94 in the first inning as the right-hander fanned eight allowing four singles and a walk. The Yankees got three of those hits to load the bases in the fourth but the ‘String Bean Slinger’ fanned the side to end the threat....Kyle Burke (5-1 3.21) got the win tossing two scoreless frames and Zach Cates (9-9 4.19) earned his first save allowing a run in three innings on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
Cubs Notes: The Cubs released the schedule for the upcoming series at Daytona with Dunedin. The two team swill play a single game on Aug. 26 and then back-to-back doubleheaders on Aug. 27-28.
Low A—Kane County 5, Beloit 2
Kane County (21-38, 51-74) snapped a five-game losing streak winning the final game of the home stand beating Beloit (28-32, 71-59).
At the Plate: Kane County scored four times in the seventh as Jeimer Candelario (.253/.345/.388) delivered a two-run single and Rock Shoulders (.255/.351/.453) followed with his 18th homer of the season. Trevor Gretzky (.412/.444/.412) tied the game in the bottom of the second with a RBI single as the outfielder went 2-3 with a run.
On the Mound: Scott Baker made his sixth rehab start working four innings. The right-hander allowed four hits and the only run came on a solo homer. He fanned three, walked two and got six ground ball outs....Justin Amlung (5-4 3.95) got the victory tossing three shutout frames on two hits, two walks with four punchouts....Andrew McKirahan (2-0 3.12) allowed an unearned run over the final two innings with three strikeouts.
Short-Season—Boise 8, Salem-Keizer 1
Boise (38-29) scored five times in the first and swept Salem-Keizer (39-28) for the first time in team history on the road.
At the Plate: The Hawks scored five times in the first as Justin Marra (.254/.343/.542) smacked his second three-run homer (5) in as many days. Kevin Encarnacion (.356/.441/.545) added a RBI double and he scored on Rony Rodriguez’s RBI single. Encarnacion had a big night hitting a solo homer (5) in the third to finish 5-5, a triple shy of the cycle with two RBI and three runs. Rodriguez (.265/.333/.404) went 2-5 and added a RBI single in the ninth.
On the Mound: Paul Blackburn (2-3 3.35 ERA) only allowed a single but the right-hander worked around six free passes to get the win. He walked the bases full in the fourth but pitched out of the jam getting a double play to end the inning, one of three turned by the Hawks... Loiger Padron (2-3 5.29) gave up a run in two innings on two hits and two walks. Scott Frazier (1-2 2.75) finished off the Volcanoes with two shutout innings.
Hawks Notes: Daniel Lockhart left the game after getting hit by a pitch in the knee in the fifth inning....Kevin Encarnacion had the first five-hit game for Boise since IF Dustin Harrington did it in 2010.

The Cubs clinched the Boca Chica South winning the suspended game from July 4.
At the Plate: Antonio Valerio had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run to lead the offense. Luis Acosta, Shamil Ubiera, Roney Alcala and Antonio Gonzalez all knocked in runs.
On the Mound: Frailin Figueroa pitched four scoreless innings on July 4 and Hector Perez (2-1 2.08) added four more blanking the Yankees on one hit with five strikeouts. The ninth was interesting as the Yankees scored two times as Cubs pitching walked five before Carlos Llano (6-1 4.09), the third pitcher of the inning, got the final two outs for the save.
